Our most sincere condolences to the entire family.
I know Zewde to be gentle, soft spoken. Never seems to rush or say more than needed. More than anything, his eyes always expressed deep Love for and Pride in his children. My personal best "visual memory" that I can never shake is how happy and proud he looked at the Father-Daughter dance with Mamé.
We were all so lucky to have known him and loved him.
May he rest in Peace.
Love, Zewditu Bekele-Arcuri and Family

To the dear family of Zewde, we convey our deepest condolences to the dear wife and family of Zewde. We were so happy that when they came to visit their daughter in the Sultanate of Oman, who is our close family friend, that they very kindly took the time to drive quite far to visit the eldest person in our family - “hababa” ( our dear mother , mother in law and grandmother). We never forgot this touching gesture from such a lovely gentleman and his wife. We pass our sincerest condolences to all members of the family, those we met who also visited their sister in Oman and all their siblings, spouses and families. We were very happy to participate in remembering Zewde in watching the live service, from far across the skies in Oman. May his soul Rest In Peace and the family have the strength to bear this sad loss. From Salim, Salma all our daughters and son and all ‘hababa’s’ family members.

I have known Gashe Zewde all my life. He was a father figure to me. Specially after I joined Ethiopian Airlines I became very close to him as I seeked his advice, guidance and mentorship. I remember once after work we saw each other at the parking lot and we were chatting when one of the executives was walking to his car he greeted both of us and left. The next day I ran into the guy and he asked “how did you know Zewde?” I said he is my uncle, he asked on your mother’s side or your father’s? I said well, his wife Etye Elsa is my mom’s younger sister. He said that doesn’t make him your uncle. That was the day I found out that if you are not related by blood you can’t refer a person by that title. Blood or no blood to this day I call him my uncle and he was the best Uncle. When I got married he was living in Abudhabi he flew to Ethiopia Just to attend my weeding, I will not forget the joy I felt when I saw him, his presence made my weeding very special. His Unconditional love for his children and my Aunt; respect and dedication for his extended family can’t be expressed in words.
Rest in Eternal Paradise Gashe Zewde, you have left a big hole that nothing or no one can ever fill, you will always live in my heart.

I was very fortunate to meet Zewde and his dearest wife Elizabeth while I was on a visit to Addis Ababa back in 2016 and again when they visited the beautiful Sultanate of Oman a couple of years later. It was indeed an honour and a pleasure for me to meet such gentle and kind elders from the kind of generation who we take the best example from today; such generation who worked so very very hard to support their families while bringing with them beacons of light shining from their exemplary manners, tolerance and strong faith. Although our meetings were not long, the impression left imprinted on my heart is never ending and today it was with deep sadness that I watched from afar, all the way in Oman, the beautiful live service honouring such a wonderful man. I cherish the memories of our meetings and extend my condolences to his dearest wife and all his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace and prayers for him continue to pass down through the next generations. Ameen. Lynne. 💛🧡💚
Ato Zewde Teklu (1937-2020)
Ato Zewde Teklu was born in Nurena (Sodo) Shoa province on June 22,1937 to his father Ato Teklu Metcho and his mother Woizero Zenebech Egzero. He was born during the Italian occupation years and often told the story of how families hid in the forest during daytime to evade the occupying force and the difficulty his mother experienced from being shunned by others as she was carrying a crying newborn that would tip-off hiding locations.
Ato Zewde spent the first few years of his life with his grandparents and other first-born cousins as was customary for the family. While he was still a small child, he was taken to Nazareth/Adama and reunited with his parents following the early death of his young sister Adanech.
Ato Zewde started his formal education at Atse Gelawdewos primary school. After successfully advancing to high school, which meant moving away from Nazareth to Addis Ababa, his beloved mother pleaded with her only son to repeat another year of elementary school at home and not move away. However, he moved to Addis Ababa in 1954 and pursued three years of high-school education at the General Wingate School, which was one of the three most prestigious high-schools in Addis Ababa at the time. Following that, he was enrolled at the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Technical School and studied Aircraft and Engine Maintenance Engineering for three years. After successful completion, he received certification from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation as well as United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It was at this stage of his life that he developed special and deep relationships with many lifelong friends in the same career and even built their residences in close proximity and lived as neighbors for decades.
Upon completion of his education and specialized training, Ato Zewde began his lifelong career in aviation in 1959 by working as a Junior Mechanic for Ethiopian Airlines. He subsequently progressed through the ranks of Senior Mechanic, Lead Inspector, Foreman, Manager, and eventually served as the Director of Power Plant and Engine Overhaul, overseeing all engine related work of Ethiopian Airlines as well as other airlines that had their aircrafts serviced by Ethiopian Airlines. Ato Zewde was among the earliest employees of Ethiopian Airlines who were instrumental in transitioning the airline from American management to a fully Ethiopian institution that has become a symbol of Ethiopian pride for all citizens.
In 1990 Ato Zewde retired from Ethiopian Airlines after 31 years of service. He then moved to Abu Dhabi, UAE and continued working in the aviation industry as a Planning Engineer for Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Company (GAMCO) until 1992. He spent the next 10 years of his life back in Ethiopia engaged in small private business enterprises.
In 2003 Ato Zewde moved to the United States where he lived and worked for the last 17 years of his life. True to his character of always maintaining responsibility for one’s self and being independent, he worked in various roles with Colonial and Mid-Atlantic Parking located at NIH in Bethesda until 2019. Throughout his career and life, Ato Zewde always believed in self-improvement and strived to be a life-time learner and up to date with the world around him.
Ato Zewde was wedded to his loving wife Woizero Elizabeth Tequame on January 25, 1964 and was happily married for 56 years till the time of his death. He was father to three sons (Neway, Abiy, Tequame) and three daughters (Mekdim, Anchinlema, Elilta) and a beloved grandparent to three boys (Addis, Noah, Eliab) and four girls (Selamawit, Maya, Sofia, Nadia) which he loved and adored. Though he grew up as an only child, his kindness and love for his cousins and extended family was boundless and many considered him as their dearest brother. Likewise, he maintained deep relationships with his closest friends of six decades as well as many he befriended later in his life in the United States. Ato Zewde always pursued his hobbies passionately from being intimately involved in Ethiopian Football in his early adulthood to NBA’s Washington Wizards in his later years. He always enjoyed music and dancing at social functions, and particularly enjoyed dancing the traditional Gurage dance of his heritage.
Ato Zewde always approached life with practicality and common sense even as his health declined and his final days were at hand. Ato Zewde died peacefully on the night of June 27, 2020 at the age of 83 surrounded by his entire family.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
