

Skowhegan- Alton W. Whittemore, 89, passed away on January 1, 2010 at Maple Crest Living and Rehabilitation with his loving family at his side. Alton was born in Skowhegan on April 15, 1920; a son of the late Alton and Pearl Whittemore. He served in the United States Army as a Sergeant in the South Pacific. Alton was a very accomplished and successful man; well known and respected by the community in which he lived. He owned and operated a Whittemore’s Real Estate for many years with his wife and also owned Whittemore’s apartments. Some of his many accomplishments and endeavors include; Tri-State School of Realtors, a partner at Whittemore’s Grill, a Foreman for Medwed Footwear Co. He served on the Human Services Committee, was a Selectman and Chairman for the Overseers of Poor, a Director of the Maine Publicity Bureau, a State Representative, was an Incorporator of Skowhegan Savings Bank and also an Incorporator and Trustee for the Franklin Savings Bank, a stockholder and Director of Skowhegan Motor Lodge, a Director for Redington Memorial Home, a former President of Kennebec Valley Board of Realtors and received realtor of the Year in 1971. A former President for Northern Kennebec Valley Board of realtors, a Director of tri-State school of Realtors, director for State of Maine Realtors Association and a Director for KVBA Education Committee. Alton started the job bank for Junior High and Senior High School Students and was a Vice President of Sesquicentennial. Alton was honored by the Skowhegan Eagles Club as a Home Town Builder, by the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge for Citizen of the Year, and by the Town of Skowhegan Annual Report. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award through the Lions Club and a recipient of the Alton W. Whittemore award through the Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Skowhegan also honored and recognized Alton and named a sidewalk after him. Alton was very active in the community, some of his Memberships Affiliations include the; Skowhegan Toast Masters Club, Skowhegan Lions Club, Skowhegan Sportsman’s Club, Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Lifetime member, American Legion, Skowhegan VFW Lifetime member, the Eagles Club, he also served on the Planning Board, Budget Committee, Human Services Committee and Industrial Committee, as well as Town Safety Committee, Transportation Committee, Sidewalk Committee, and for the Skowhegan Customer Advisory Committee. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, Council for US Post Office Church Council at Notre Dame de Lourdes where he was also an active communicant and was a former alter server. He was also a Lifetime member of the Skowhegan State Fair, and Advisory Council for Senior Spectrum. Alton is survived by his son Terry Whittemore Sr. and his wife Nancy of Solon, daughter Linda Whittemore of Skowhegan, three grandchildren; Terry Whittemore Jr. and his wife Ann Marie, Sherry Integlia and her husband Steve, Tammy Steuber and her husband Glenn, six great grandchildren; Danielle Hebert, Scott, Ashley and Kaitlyn Whittemore, Laura Lee and K.C. Finn, two brothers; Carlton Whittemore and his wife Lucille, Henry Whittemore and his wife Shirley, a sister Flora Zappala, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife Lauretta (LaChance) Whittemore on January 19, 2007, two brothers Warren and Joe Whittemore and by three sisters; Katherine, Altina and Marguerite. Alton’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation and a sincere thank you to all of the staff at Maple Crest Living and Rehabilitation, Hospice and Health Reach. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 8, 2010 at from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Smart & Edwards Funeral, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church at 10 am, committal will be held at a later date in the spring.
