Angeline V. Everett, 96, of Norridgewock, passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 2, 2013 from this life into the arms of Heaven after a brief period of illness at the Somerset Rehab and living center in Bingham, Maine.
She left this life the same way that she lived it, with a calm, resolve, “Whatever will be” strength of will for all to see.
She was born on February 14, 1917, to Hiram D. and Martha E. (Grant) Savage, the 2nd daughter and fourth child of the couple.
She was educated in the Norridgewock Schools completing 10th grade, and walked from Oak Hill to Norridgewock daily with her sister to attend school.
Upon the death of her mother in April 1932, when she was 15, she and Gertrude assumed responsibilities of the Savage household, raising the three younger children with the assistance from their beloved grandpa Grant, that summer they canned 100 quarts of vegetables on the family woodstove, then stood back and admired the jars on the shelves. She was first and fore-most a farm girl from Oak Hill.
She began work on the Benny and Maude Yeaton farm in Norridgewock, doing the housework and tending the young Yeaton children. She stayed home for a period of time raising her young children, then began working at Norrwock and MedWed Shoe Shops in both Skowhegan and Norridgewock working as a French Cord Turner, for many years and enjoyed working with Marilyn Veneziano and all the laughter they had. She abruptly quit the shops wanting something new and obtained her CNA (certified Nursing Assistant) certificate and began the “dream job” of her life working nights as a CNA, in the Nursery at Redington Fairview General Hospital, occasionally assisting with deliveries, she loved all the babies, and took great delight in feeding, rocking them and mourned sorrowfully with co-worker Laura Brown over the baby they named “Rosebud”. Upon completion of the night shift, she worked mornings cleaning at Woodlawn Nursing Home to supplement her income during those lean years. She also worked part-time at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, cooking and cleaning up from 2p.m. – 8 p.m., part-time and did the dishes, wanting to quit but persevered due to “everything is so high.”
In later years, she worked days as a CNA on the Med/ Surg. Unit at her beloved Redington Fairview General Hospital. At an advanced age, she remained working three days a week and retired at the age of 83. After working a lifetime of extremely hard work and selflessly giving of herself to not only family, but all around her.
She had many lifelong friends, both at Redington Fairview General Hospital and at home and was she was loved by all who knew her.
Thorough the years, she was involved in community activities, being an active member of the Baptist Church and later the Congregational Church, also the Philathea, Grange, Rebekah and Jolly Bells of the Church. She attended bible study and was a humble Christian who walked daily with her God.
She loved quilting, sewing and many family members benefitted from her long hours hunched over her sewing machine, making quilts, pillows. She loved gardening and canning, picking berries, feeding and watering the birds and enjoyed meals with her family. No meal was complete without her pickles, biscuits and molasses cookies that she had lovingly prepared and often offering some to go. More than anything she loved her family and especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a beloved “Gram” to everyone.
She was our home in times of trouble, and the fixed person in our universe, never changing. No matter how lost you were, you found your way home and were safe with her. She will be greatly missed and leaves a huge hole in all lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her children; Reginald (Nola) Mayo, Patricia Perry and her significant other Tom Baker, Shirley (Jack) Mayo Hausler, Ruby Everett, Darroll (Debbie) Everett, Ramona (Glen) Abbott, and Pamela Everett, sister Estelle Rollins, special sister in-law Letha Wasson, her 27 grandchildren, her 41 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews and a special niece Darlene Bell, whose giving spirit and love toward aunt Angie was unparalleled, and her special cat, Oreo.
She was predeceased by her parents, infant son Raymond (Sonny) Mayo, son Greg Everett, sister Gertrude Ricker, brothers; Merton and Ezra Savage, 2 infant brothers, son in-law; David Perry, her great-grandson Christopher King.
A graveside service will be held later in the spring at the E. Mercer Cemetery in Mercer, Maine.
