She was born October 7, 1927 in Limerick, Maine, the daughter of Archie F. Mercier and Mary Ida (Legere) Mercier.
She attended Limerick Schools and moved to Skowhegan where she worked in local shoe shops, most recently at New Balance until her retirement in 1983. In 1974, she earned her GED, and in 1978 was awarded a basic corrections training certificate from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
A fiercely independent and feisty woman, she had a great love of animals, especially dogs and cats, but her greatest love and pride was her grandchildren, Ericka and Josh with whom she spent much time in their younger years.
At some point, she found a love of oil painting with her granddaughter, Ericka and instructor, Peggy Graf Reilly. She completed several paintings of lighthouses which will be a treasure for the family forever.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Raymond and sister, Lorraine.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Norton) Johnson and husband Bill of Pittsfield, two grandchildren, Ericka Pawlowski and her husband Alexei of San Diego, along with their children, Sibylla, Vasili, Liev and Kiran; and Josh Johnson and his girlfriend Daryl and daughter Lydia of Skowhegan; special nieces, Donna Ducharme of Brownville and Bev McKay of Maryland; a longtime close friend, Jackie Cowan of Madison; her beloved dog, Cisco and several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and Hospice at RFGH in Skowhegan, especially, Dr. Eric, nurses Jessica and Kim, CNA Cathy (with a C), and Hospice nurse, Onneka.
Per her request, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Anyone wishing to make donations in her name please do so to the Somerset Animal Shelter, PO Box 453, Skowhegan, Maine 04976
