Elsie was born February 24, 1941 in Cheswold, Delaware. She was born at home, on the 500 acre farm, near Garrison Lake; she was the daughter of E.J. Leiby and Vonnetta Grace Weeks Leiby.
Elsie was employed by Sappi in the early 70’s as a construction secretary, during the building of Scott Paper of Hinckley. She earned her LPN in 1974 and began her nursing career at Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan then transferring to Thayer Hospital in Waterville. She became a R.N. in 1985 and retired from Thayer at 70 years of age.
Our mother was an accomplished seamstress, having made all our clothes when we were younger. And doll clothes that she sold for extra income. She also could can, cook, crochet, needlepoint, and braid beautiful rugs. She enjoyed traveling, having traveled coast to coast to Canada, Mexico, Cayman Islands, and Jamaica. Elsie loved music and attended many concerts with her friend Lana. She also loved genealogy, reading, and puttering around her Hinckley property on her golf cart.
Elsie was a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the antique tractor association and a red hatter.
She will always be remembered for her hearty laugh and the lore of a fine wine.
Elsie was predeceased by her parents and her many beloved brothers and sisters, Daniel, Pierce, Alan, Harry, Claude, Bertha, Helen, Emma, Florence, Mamie and Grace.
She is survived by her sisters Edna and Lillian; her son Scott Brown of Hinckley, and daughter Bethany Davidson of Waterville; her granddaughters Amber Dawn, Mia Mills and Katie and Kambra Wocester and Briana Veilleux, her great-granddaughters. She is also survived by a very special sister in-law Patricia Leiby and a cousin Philip Weeks and his wife Liz; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday December 3, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Baptist Church of Pishon’s Ferry, 1 Pishon Ferry Rd., Clinton, Maine.
Her family would like to extend their thanks and warm regards to Lakewood Nursing Home for their compassion and patience with our mother through this most difficult time. Your love and laughter was greatly appreciated.
Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave. Skowhegan, Maine.
