Skowhegan- Florence _. “Auntie” Salley, 91, of Skowhegan, passed away peacefully on Aug. 6, 2010 with her family by her side, following a long illness.
She was one of eight children born to Henry and Laio (Vigue) Pelotte.
Florence was educated in the Waterville Schools.
She married Ira A. Salley on Nov. 18, 1939 in Waterville.
She worked on the floor at the Lockwood Cotton Mill in Waterville for several years. During World War II while her husband was in the military, she drove truck in Virginia and North Carolina area where he was stationed. Following the war, they moved back to the Waterville area where she worked in several green houses and later worked closely with her husband buying and selling antiques and other used items.
She was well known for her spring flowers and her hand made Christmas wreaths, which she sold throughtout the state.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening.
Florence was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, she was happiest when surrounded by all of them. She cherished her time with her family, including many nieces and nephews who enjoyed and still are enjoying “Auntie and Iky’s Camp” in China, Maine.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, infant son, Ivan Ira Salley; grandson, Jonathan Giles; one sister, Evelyn Morrison; four brothers, James, Willie, Alphie, and Rosaire Pelotte; brother-in-laws, Lafey Pooler, Charles King and Frank Morrison; sisters-in-laws, Alice, Yvette and Juliette Pelotte.
She is survived by her husband Ira, of 71 years, of Skowhegan; two daughters, Sharol Oliver of Oakland, Sandra Meader and her husband, Kevin, of Skowhegan; one brother, Fanado Pelotte and his companion, Mamie Ouellette, of Waterville; one sister, Emma King of Rhode Island; two sister-in-laws, Isabelle Pelotte of Florida and Belgrade, Bernice Pelotte of Waterville; grandchildren, Bobbie Jo Roderick and her husband, Michael Roderick, Myron “Billy” Hutchins, Danielle Castle, Jamie Salley, Nicholas Meader and his wife, Nikki Meader and Michael Meader; great grandchildren, Abigail, Hannah, Laurel, Payson and Preasley; many nieces and nephews, all of who will miss her dearly.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Me.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame Catholic Church, Silver St., Waterville, Maine with the father Paul Murray officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Francis Cemetery in Waterville.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alicia Forster and all the nurses at the Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan for all the care and support.
