He was born September 9, 1938 in Oakland, Maine, the son of Harold F. Sawtelle and Beatrice (Grant) MacDonald.
Gerald was educated in Oakland and also served in the US National Guard in Waterville.
He worked for the Skowhegan State Fair Association for 25 years as a maintenance foreman, he was also in charge of the Skowhegan ice rink for 25 years, until 1992. He then worked for Liberty Management in charge of maintenance for 16 years.
Gerald was a life time member of the Skowhegan State Fair Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved to go camping. He enjoyed riding the scooters around Storyland and Santa’s Village in New Hampshire with his grandchildren. He loved westerns and live PD shows, he was an avid reader especially westerns, enjoyed painting, putting model cars together and loved to play cards especially cribbage. He loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his seven children, Richard Sawtelle, David Sawtelle, Donnie Mullen and his wife Paula of Alberta, Canada, Michelle Dudley and her husband Pete of VA, Gerald Sawtelle Jr. and his wife Donna of Plymouth, Kandi Williamson and her husband Marc of Smithfield, Scott Sawtelle of Wilton; his sister, Shirlene Wellman and her husband Bob of Norridgewock; his brother, William Sawtelle of Fairfield; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He raised a niece and nephew Debbie Sawtelle and Billy Sawtelle and then special nephew Bruce Fields.
He was predeceased by his parents, his son Jake Sawtelle, and his brothers James and Robert Sawtelle.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday September 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Gould Cemetery in Smithfield, Maine.
