

Skowhegan – Gwendolyn Spalding Chase, 97, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home. She was born in Belfast on November 17, 1918 the daughter of Sarah (Wright) and Armand L. Spalding. Gwen graduated from Bloomfield Academy class of 1937. She married Norman Chase on December 25, 1937. Gwen was employed by W.T. Grant Company and J.C. Penney Company in Skowhegan.
After joining the Priscilla Rebekah Lodge #69 in June of 1957, Gwen became very active in the many facets of the lodge. Gwen held various offices over the years. She was a noble grand and District deputy president. She and her husband were active in the Theda Pho Girls Club. She particularly liked to make the many table favors for the lodge and all of the other crafting projects. In 1986 she received the “Declaration of Chivalry” from the Grand Lodge. For many years she traveled with the Rebekahs to Washington, DO to lay a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Gwen and Norman belonged to the local square dance club and were presidents one year. They danced across the state and even in Europe. People will remember her dancing at “Ma Bean’s” diner.
Gwen was predeceased by her husband in July 1993 and her parents.
She is survived by her children, Norman “Larry” Chase and wife Bernice of Skowhegan, Katherine and husband Donald Terrell of Steuben and Elizabeth “Betty” and husband Jerome Allen of Winslow; seven grandchildren, Todd and Donna Terrell, Deborah Chase, Pamela Turgeon, Beth Hardenburg, Tom Allen and Kim Townsend; ten great grandchildren, Shane and Wayne Terrell, Dylan Hardenburg, Brooke Roy, Joslynn and Ava Allen, Chase and Kasidy Turgeon, and Natalie and Sydney Townsend.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8pm, Tuesday, August 16 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Avenue, Skowhegan. A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held 10am, Wednesday, August 17 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 113 Dr. Mann Rd, Skowhegan with Pastor Rick Dorian officiating. Interment will follow at Southside Cemetery, Skowhegan.
Gwen’s family extends their gratitude to the staff at Cedar Ridge for their kindness.
