Harold was born in Vanceboro, Maine on December 20, 1924, son of the late Harold A. and Effie M. (Grant) Scribner. He attended Vanceboro schools and graduated from Vanceboro High School in 1943. After enlisting into the U.S. Army, he served in the European Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. As a result of the injuries he sustained, he spent a substantial amount of time in military hospitals before returning to the United States on the USS Charles A. Stafford Navy Hospital Ship in 1945.
In 1951, he graduated from the Maine State Police Criminal Justice Academy which commenced his 26 year career as a loyal and dedicated Maine State Police Officer. Rising to the rank of Major before his retirement in 1977, he held numerous positions including Commanding Officer Troop C in Skowhegan; Field Division Commander supervising four of Maine’s seven troops; Commanding Officer traffic Division for the State, and Operations Officer for the Maine State Police. During his distinguished career, Harold was recognized for his bravery and meritorious service by the National Police Officers Association and the Maine State Police relating to his rescue of a wounded fellow police officer while under fire at Limerick, Maine.
Harold was a past American Legion Commander Post# 109 Togus, past Chapter President of the Central Maine State Employees Association, a past President of the Central Maine Shrine Club and a past member of the Board of Directors for the Skowhegan Lions Club. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post# 7865 and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Harold and Leora “Micki” McCarty were married on June 26, 1948 at the Togus pre-Civil War chapel located on the Maine Veterans Administration Center Togus Campus. Harold and Micki first met while both were employed at the Center. As Harold was progressing up through the ranks of the Maine State Police, Harold and Micki lived with their family in Augusta, North Windham, Windham and North Berwick before finally settling in their home of nearly fifty years on Water Street in Skowhegan.
Harold enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, fishing and maintaining his lawn and gardens on Water Street. He loved spending time with his family and friends and treasured family gatherings and outings over the years.
In addition to his parents, Harold is predeceased by his loving wife Leora who passed away on May 26, 2012; sisters Anna Saulnier and Thelma Ray; nephew Perry Ray; and niece Kay McGinnis.
He is survived by his daughter Margaret “Peggy” Scribner-Wales and her husband Jon of Skowhegan; son David of Skowhegan; grandson Reeve of South Portland; granddaughter Mary of Wasilla, AK; and great grandchildren Rebecca and Jacob. He is also survived by his sister Theda Colby of Waterville; nieces Donna Bizeau, Dale Seaburg, Linda McDonald and Phyllis Horvith; nephews Bill Colby, Dennis Raye, Frank Raye, Paul Raye and Wayne Ray; brother in-law and longtime friend Walter Golden; as well as numerous great nieces and great nephews.
Harold greatly appreciated the kind acts provided to him during his illness by his family and friends particularly Patricia Coro and Glennis McKechnie.
Harold’s family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Brandt and the entire staff of the VA Medical Center as well as the Togus Hospice Unit for the kind and dedicated care that provided Harold with dignity and compassion during his final days.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday May 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt Vernon Rd., Augusta, Maine with military honors. There will be a gathering of family and friends after the service at the V.F.W. Post # 887 located at 509 Leighton Rd., Augusta, Maine.
