
Jerry proudly served our country in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. During his service, Jerry was exposed to Agent Orange. He suffered the effects for the remainder of his life and it eventually caused his death.
Jerry married Donna (Sweetsir) in 1969 and in 1976 they moved to Norridgewock to raise their family. When he was able, Jerry loved carpentry. He built their garage, tool shed and porch. Jerry held a special place in his heart for their pets: Jeepster the Boston bull terrier, Sugar the Yorkipoo and their cat Mittens.
He was predeceased by his parent, George and Betty (Butts) Newton; 2 brothers, Jim and George Newton; and parents-in-law, Olive and Clinton Sweetsir.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna Newton; sons, Mark Newton and Jerry Newton, Jr. and wife Joy; step-children, Yvonne Boothby and Yvette Frazier and husband Mark; grandchildren, Jacob, Nicole, Breanna, Clarissa, Lindsey, Brittany, and Brian; great grandchildren, Brooke and Devon; brothers, Jack Newton and wife Mary and John Newton and wife Helen; several nieces and nephews; and dear friends Sandy and Gary Dodge and Pierre and Pat Ayotte.
A funeral service will held at 11am, Friday, May 20 at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine. Interment with military honors will follow at 1pm at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Rd, Augusta.
Jerry’s family extends their deep appreciation to Redington-Fairview EMS, Norridgewock Fire, and the Somerset Sheriff’s office for their professionalism, care and compassion during such a difficult time.
