

Waterville – Kathryn Belle (Ridgway) Sargent greeted her Lord and Savior on December 1, 2012. She had lived at The Memory Care Center at the Woodlands in Waterville since 2002. She was born on October 18, 1916 in Bradenton, Florida the daughter of Peter Penn and Hattie Pearl Ridgway. Kathryn was the oldest daughter among seven siblings. She had two older brothers, Frank and William and four younger siblings, Rosa Lee, Woodrow, Mary Josephine and Joe. They all shared responsibilities on the Ridgway Dairy Farm when they lived in Manatee County. Kathryn loved to share stories about her family life in Florida.
As a young adult, Kathryn travelled with an evangelical team, singing in a ladies quartet and playing the saxophone. She also played the piano, organ, trumpet, trombone and accordion. She attended Northwest Christian College from 1939 – 1941. When she returned to Florida, she worked for Singer Sewing Company teaching others how to sew. There in Tampa, she met her husband Clifton W. Sargent, from Skowhegan. They were married on April 16, 1944 and lived on McDill Air Force Base during WWII. She had her first daughter, Cliftine Kay while living in Florida.
When the war ended they moved to Maine and settled in Portland and Pittsfield before landing in a permanent home in Norridgewock in 1950. By then, they had two more daughters, Charlene Mae and Nancy Josephine.
Kathryn was a Baptist member of the Norridgewock Federated Church and was a part of the Margaret Williams Philathea Class, the United Circle and the Couples Club. She was the church’s organist and choir director for many years. She was often asked to sing at weddings.
Kathryn was also a member of the Norridgewock Historical Society, Order of the Eastern Star and The Norridgewock Village Improvement Society. She was President of the Redington Fairview Hospital Auxiliary. Kathryn was a substitute teacher when her daughters were growing up and later became the office manager for Dr. Harland Turner.
She loved frying chicken, baking apple pies, and sewing clothes for her daughters. She helped tend a large vegetable garden and enjoyed her flowers. When she was not working hard, Kathryn played and sang at her piano, relaxed at the family cottage in East Madison and traveled to Florida to visit family.
In addition to her parents and siblings, Kathryn is predeceased by her husband, Clifton W. Sargent and daughter, Charlene Mae (Sargent) Apezteguia. She is survived by two daughters, Cliftine Kay (Sargent) Fortin and her husband Joe Fortin of Madison and Nancy Josephine (Sargent) Morin and her husband Larry Morin of Pittsfield; son-in-law, Mike Apezteguia of Lyman, Wyoming; nine grandchildren, Stacy O’Brien and her husband Tom, Robert Shibley and his wife Carol, Adam Price, Derrick Morin and his wife Anna, Scott Morin, Melody Apezteguia, Miguel Apezteguia and his wife Corrine, Melinda Lewis, Johanna Howard and her husband Matt; and twelve great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 1pm until the time of services on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Norridgewock Community Baptist Church, 22 Upper Main Street, Norridgewock where a funeral service will begin at 2pm with the Pastor Bill Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the spring.

Kathryn’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the caring and compassionate nurses, staff and administrators at the Assisted Living and Memory Care Centers at the Woodlands and Beacon Hospice.
