1932-2018
HARTLAND – L. Ruth Baird, 85, of Hartland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in Pittsfield. She was born on June 6, 1932 in Cambridge, the eldest daughter of Clyde and Edna (Chapman) Watson. Ruth started her education in Cambridge; and then, she went on to graduate from Hartland Academy where she met the love of her life, Webster Baird. They were married in Hartland on June 6, 1954 at the Grace Linn Methodist Church. Ruth and Webbie had 35 years of marriage together before he was taken too soon on September 12, 1989.
They had some wonderful times together raising their sons, Harold first and then Timothy. They were dedicated to teaching the boys about fishing, hunting, trapping and many other lessons. Above all else, the boys were taught that family came first.
Over the years, Ruth had many jobs from working at Baxter Cannery and Norwock Shoe to waitressing. Ruth was a faithful, kind and caring person who found joy in helping others. This led her to work at the hospital, nursing home and then later with some of our littlest people at Jack-in-the-Box Nursery School during her retirement.
Back in the day, Ruth loved playing cards with the girls and going to ceramics classes. She enjoyed doing word-search puzzles, going out to eat and she especially enjoyed adventures with her friend Lorraine. Ruth loved to just sit on the camp porch and watch the sunset. Now that she and Webbie have reunited, they are sitting together again.
Ruth will be missed by her sons, Harold Baird and his companion Tammy Goulettte of Hartland; Timothy Baird and his wife Cindy of Newport; beloved grandchildren, Melissa Twitchell and her husband Troy of Hartland, Nathan Baird of Newport, Adam Baird and his wife Heidi of Lebanon, Alex Baird and his girlfriend Olivia Brown of Newport, and Jenna Baird of Newport. She also leaves behind her precious great-granddaughter, Ellura Twitchell of Hartland; siblings, Stanley Watson and his wife Iva of Skowhegan, Donna Sawyer of Cambridge, Ronnie Watson and his wife Beverly of Cambridge; sister-in-law, Eva Baird of Florida and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, companion William Cuddy and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
A graveside service will be held at 10am, Tuesday, May 22 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hartland with Rev. Mark Tanner, officiant. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 654 State Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
