Skowhegan - Marion G. (Nickerson) Harris, 98, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2013 in Skowhegan. She was born January 21, 1915 in Corinna, the daughter of Charles and Evylyn (Gray) Nickerson. Marion was raised with her seven siblings on the family farm in Corinna.
After graduating from high school she worked at Eastland Woolen Mill. On November 5, 1936 she married Donald Harris also of Corinna. In 1947 they moved their family to Norridgewock so their children could attend Riverview Intermediate, the school associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norridgewock. Marion then worked as a stitcher at Norrwock Shoe for many years while raising her children and caring for her parents. Marion’s work ethic was an example for her family to follow. As an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Marion boarded students who attended the school, ran the community service for 12 years and sang in the choir. She loved to sing and she spent many hours reading and studying the Bible.
Holidays, when her family could all be together, were special for Marion. She always looked forward to the annual Fourth of July celebration at the family camp at Bodfish Valley. After a cooking class via correspondence she became an even more accomplished cook and baker. Breads and candies became her specialty. In her spare time she enjoyed listening to classical music, crosswords and word search puzzles, sewing, and caring for the needs of others. Marion never missed an opportunity to tell her family how much she loved them.
Marion is survived by her children, Rebecca Wilmont and husband Robert of South Lancaster, MA, Keith Harris and wife Mary Tracy of Benton, and Bonnie Pelletier of Norridgewock; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Gloria Harris.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Donald in 1985; son, Larry Harris in 2001; and 7 siblings.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 6-8 pm, Friday, March 15 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Sunset View Cemetery, Norridgewock.
Memorial donations may be made to Riverview Memorial School, 201 Mercer Rd, Norridgewock, Maine 04957
Marion’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Cedar Ridge Center for the compassionate care they provided Marion during her time there.
