Harry was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Paonia, Colorado, to Oscar and Beda Dahl. At an early age, his family, along with his aunt Lena and cousin Edward, moved to Everett, Washington, where he spent the rest of his life. Due to the Great Depression, he was forced to quit school in the eighth grade and started delivering newspapers. This began a life of working hard at various jobs to help support himself and his family, and he was never without a job. Some of those jobs included working at the Monte Cristo Hotel, working at a drug store, working on the railroad, delivering Western Union telegrams, driving a bakery truck, driving an ice cream truck, working at a shingle mill, owning his own business and working at a Washington State Liquor store.
On October 3, 1942, Harry married Eva Ellen Heaton, whom he loved very much. He was drafted into the army and served for three years. His job was radioman and he participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe. Harry and Eva's first daughter, Deanna, was born in 1944, and Vicki, their second, was born in 1946. In 1957, Harry and Eva bought the Meadowmoor Dairy Store. They owned it for ten years, with the whole family working there. After closing the store, Harry got a job at the Washington State Liquor store, from which he retired in 1982.
Harry was an avid fly-fisherman and really enjoyed the time he and Eva spent at their cabin at Oso and fishing for steelhead on the north fork of the Stillaguamish River. He also enjoyed dancing, golf, poker and just being in the outdoors, which he taught his daughters and grandchildren to love and respect. He belonged to Sons of Norway and he and his friend Marie Meyers were in the dance group, Skandia Dancers, at Normanna Lodge that performed around the area. He also belonged to the Eagles, Elks and VFW and was a longtime member of Evergreen Fly Fishing Club.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, aunt and cousin. In 2001, after they had been married for 59 years, Eva died and he missed her greatly. His special friend, Marie Meyers, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Deanna (Grant) Gould and Vicki (Randy) Niman; granddaughter, Cailen (Ken) Heaton and grandsons, Darrin Gould, Ryan (Carly) Niman and Paul Niman; great-granddaughter, Cailey Heaton and great-grandson, August Althauser Niman.
There will be a public graveside service on May 30, at noon, at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, 1516 SE Everett Mall Way, in Everett. A reception will follow at 1:30, at Edmonds Church of God, 8224 220th St. SW, Edmonds.
