Mavis was born on May 4, 1941, in Farmington, Minnesota, to Helen and Chester Storlie, the oldest of seven children. From an early age, she carried a strong sense of responsibility, compassion and care for others—qualities that would define her life.
She graduated from Luther College in 1963 and began her career in education, teaching first and fourth grades. She taught in Minnesota, Washington, Germany and The Philippines. She had a love of children, a dedication to learning and a great respect for her Norwegian heritage.
In 1972, Mavis married Dennis “Denny” Brandt and moved to Washington where she lived for 54 years building a life centered on family, faith and community. She was a devoted mother to her four children, always placing her family at the heart of everything she did.
In 1981, she was a founding member of Unity Church for Today in Lynnwood, reflecting her deep spiritual roots and commitment to connection and service.
Mavis had a lifelong love for music and the arts. She and Denny often hosted Sing and Share sing-along gatherings in their home. She attended many concerts and was a well-known supporter of Everett Civic Music and the Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish.
Her greatest pride and joy was being Nana to her 5 grandchildren, each of whom she loved deeply and celebrated wholeheartedly. She had a remarkable gift for remembering birthdays and special occasions, making those around her feel seen, valued and cherished.
Later in life she worked as a caregiver at an assisted living facility offering comfort, dignity and kindness to those in their last seasons of life. In a full-circle meaningful way, she spent her final days there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis; son Garrick; brother Kenneth Storlie. She is survived by her children, Davin Brandt, Mindy (Alex) Gillespie, Leanne Durfee and her grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Elliana, Amaya and Kiera.
Mavis will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generosity and kindness and commitment to caring for others. She leaves a legacy of love that continues in all who knew her.
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday June 19, 2026 at 2:00pm at Bauer Funeral Chapel in Snohomish. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Thumbnail Theater are appreciated.
