Nov. 5, 1930 – June 18, 2013
Tommy Evans passed away peacefully after suffering a debilitating stroke in December 2012. Always a fighter, Tom struggled to regain his capabilities until the very end. He recently stated that he had to get better so he could attend the Evans' family picnic and greet his new great grandchild due in August.
Tom was born at the family farm in Cathcart, WA, to Phillip and Ida Evans. It was on the farm with his two brothers, Leston (Bud) and Phillip and four sisters,
Eileen, Phyllis, Mildred and Mary Anne, he learned the importance of family, hard work, and laughter.
After leaving Snohomish High School, Tom joined the Army and was stationed at Ft. Richardson in Alaska during the Korean War. Before leaving for Alaska, Tom married the love of his life, Marjorie (Bunny) McCulloch. They have fond memories and lifelong friends from those early years together. After being discharged, Tom joined the Boeing Company in Seattle where he worked for over 30 years. He worked in the carpenter shop.
Tom's lessons of hard work from the farm carried over into his career. In the early years, he would work in the fields at the Misich Farm with his brother Bud and then work the swing shift at Boeing. Later, Tom remodeled homes, and created beautiful cabinetry.
After retiring, Tom and Bunny moved back to the Snohomish Valley, packed up the RV and traveled.
Tom's favorite saying when asked where he was headed was "wherever the smoke blows". They loved being in the south during the winter months and various trips throughout the summer with family and friends, he was always there for them and helped them out any way he could. He was an honorable and hardworking man.
Tom continued to work in his work shop and he always wanted to drive truck so he earned his CDL license and drove gravel trucks for Misich for five years. Tom loved working with his hands. From a birdhouse with his daughter and grandson to intricate fretwork and turning on his lathe, he was always happy covered in sawdust. Tom's talent with woodworking is evident by all the beautiful items he created for his family and friends. Tom loved nothing better than the family get togethers, playing cards, teasing everyone, family dinners and especially the family reunion.
Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bunny Evans; son, Jim (Jan) of Shelton, WA, Tammy
(Christy) of Des Moines, WA, Jeannie (Carl) of Richland, WA; three grandchildren Dawn Butcher, Jackie Knight, T.J. Hurd; and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Eileen McGriff, Phyllis (Al) Metz, Mary Anne Britton; his sister-in-laws, Melba Evans and Doris McElroy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring medical professionals at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Providence Hospital in Everett, Bethany on Pacific in Everett, and his nephew, Jeff Britton who stopped in to see him every week.
A memorial service will be held at the Snohomish Senior Center on June 29, 2013 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Matthew Sheppard Fund c/o Tansy Sheppard, 18308 Jim Creek, Arlington, WA, 98223 or Providence Everett Hospice.
