J. Brian Carlos, age 74, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 in the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Janice M. Brady.
Born in Providence, a son of the late William J. and Loretta M. (Davis) Carlos, he lived in South Kingston, Rhode Island, and Rehoboth, Massachusetts before moving to Portsmouth over 20 years ago.
Mr. Carlos received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and his Master’s Degree in Economics both from the University of Rhode Island. He was a Professor of Economics at Bristol Community College for over 30 years. He served as grievance officer and in other capacities on the Massachusetts Community College Council and was a powerful advocate and strong voice for educators’ rights and working conditions.
A music enthusiast, he was an avid reader. He enjoyed celebrating his Irish Heritage and most of all story telling. His passion was boating in and around Narragansett and Buzzard’s Bay.
In addition to his wife he is survived by one brother; Kevin P. Carlos and his wife Lisa of Newport, RI and one sister; Colleen Smyth of Jamestown, RI and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 10:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at ROSE E. SULLIVAN, 866 County St., Somerset. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904. Burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
