John Tavares

John Tavares, age 83, of Fall River, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018 at St. Anne’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Rosalind (Machado) Tavares to whom he was married for 63 years.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late John S. and Mary (Souza) Tavares, he had been a lifelong resident of the city.

He was the Senior Vice President of Shawmut Mills for 30 years before retiring in 1998. A member and former president of the Cape Cod Unit of the Wally Byam Airstream Club, he was a member of the Portuguese-American Athletic Club in Fall River and a lifetime member of the Fall River Elks Club, Lodge #118. While he was the former commissioner of the Fall River Airport he was actively involved in local politics.

Mr. Tavares had an analytical mind able to problem solve and fix anything, he loved traveling by Airstream throughout the U.S. and Canada and especially enjoyed being with his three grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Susan Tavares of Oak Island, NC, Sharon Silvia and her husband David of Fall River; one son, John S. Tavares and his wife Stacy of East Freetown; three grandchildren, Lauren, Jeremy and Justin; two nephews and two nieces to include Nancy Correia who offered much care and support and was “Grampa John” to Geoffrey and Andrew Sampaio. He was the brother of the late Richard Tavares.

His Funeral will be on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 8:30AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County St., Somerset, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Relatives and friends invited.
