Joseph Charves, age 74, of Somerset, MA passed away on Monday, September 26, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. “Joe”, “Papa Joe” born in Swansea, MA was the youngest of 11 children of the late Louis and Eileen (Costa) Charves.
Joe was a proud Veteran of the United States Army, 1st Calvary Division (Airmobile) serving his country during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Joseph owned and operated Charves Contracting for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, baking, auto mechanics, golfing, bowling, and joking.
Besides his devoted wife, Nelia (Miranda) Charves, Joseph is survived by his three children, Joseph Charves II and his wife Alexis, Nicole Charves-Ferrer and her husband Jorge, Jennifer Brakefield and her husband Jordan all of Fall River, MA, and stepson Christopher DeSousa and his wife Mary of Somerset, MA; and his grandchildren, Chase, Joseph, and Stephen Charves and Oliver DeSousa; four sisters, Eileen Carpenter and her husband Alphonse of Swansea, MA, Delores Carpenter of Dighton, MA, Theresa Sawyer of Townsend and Patricia Nannery and her husband James of Marlboro, MA; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Louis, Lawrence, Ronald, George and Cecelia Charves and Hilda Springer.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Visitation on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM with Military Honors and Funeral Service to be held at 1:00 PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E Sullivan, 866 County St., Somerset, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Josephs’ honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
