William F. “Bill” Applei, age 75, of North Dighton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Morton Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Dorothy “Dottie” (Trementozzi) Applei, with whom he shared 44 loving years of marriage.
Born in Norwood, he was the son of Grace M. (Ciasullo) Applei of Westwood and the late William F. Applei.
Bill lived a life defined by courage, faith, and an unwavering devotion to his family and country. A proud Navy SEAL, he served honorably during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Engineman Fireman. His extraordinary bravery and commitment to his fellow servicemen earned him numerous commendations, including two Purple Hearts, the Navy Cross, the National Defense Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal. His service to the nation remained a source of deep pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, Bill began a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service in Taunton, where he worked as a clerk for nearly thirty years before his retirement. In addition to his professional life, he pursued his artistic interests by attending the former Vesper George School of Art in Boston.
Bill remained active in the veteran community and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the former VFW Post 2094 in North Dighton.
Those who knew Bill will remember him for his quick wit and playful sense of humor. A funny quip or good-natured, corny joke was never far away, and he had a remarkable ability to lift the spirits of those around him. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He was an avid football player in his younger years. He also enjoyed playing baseball and remained a true Red Sox fan throughout his life. Ever adventurous, he discovered a love for skydiving during his Naval service.
Later in life, Bill found joy in both creative and simple everyday pursuits. He enjoyed painting, taking trips to the casino, and visiting the horse tracks at Suffolk Downs and Saratoga, where he spent time in the stables with his lifelong friend, Angelo Cambria. His interest in horse racing was a passion shared with his father and remained close to his heart. Just as much, he loved spending time outside at home. Bill took great pride in his yard and could often be found riding his tractor while mowing the lawn, enjoying the fresh air and the satisfaction of caring for the place he loved.
Above all, Bill was a man of deep faith. Prayer was a daily part of his life, and he carried a strong belief in caring for others. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or simply check in on someone who might need encouragement. His kindness, generosity, and steady presence made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Nothing brought Bill greater happiness than his family. A loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and great-grandfather, he cherished every moment spent with them. His grandchildren lovingly called him “Papa” and “Gumpa,” titles he wore with great pride, and he delighted in giving each of them their own special nickname. Many treasured memories were made on fishing trips, movie theater and arcade outings as well as in the simple moments spent together.
In addition to his beloved wife and mother, he is survived by his daughters, Rose Marie Trond and her husband Derek of Middleboro, and Kara Alysse Applei-Dias and her husband Alex Dias of North Dighton; his cherished grandchildren, Ali, Kyle, Riley, Aubree, and Zander; his great-grandchildren, Lucas, Mia, Elena, and Liam; his siblings, James Applei of New Hampshire and Linda Black and her husband Robert “Bobby” of West Roxbury; his lifelong friend, Angelo Cambria of Florida and his late friend Roland Belanger; and many close in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan 866 County Street, Somerset followed by burial with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be held Monday, March 9, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
