Mrs. Norma Jean Powers

Norma “Jean” Powers, 81 of Sophia WV, passed away on July 25, 2014, after a short courageous battle with cancer at the Bowers Hospice House in Prosperity, WV. She was a member of Sophia Freewill Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary where she previously taught the Junior High Girls Sunday School Class. Other highlights include being a Den Mother of Sophia Cub Scouts in the 50’s. As a young lady she worked at G.C. Murphy and Stone and Cook in Mullens, WV before marrying and becoming a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Madeline Street Cook and Sterlie Francis Cook. Preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Cook. Survivors include husband Millard Powers, a son Kenny Powers and wife, Jeannie Powers of Marietta , GA, daughter Dianna and husband James “Jim” Whittaker of Cary, NC, three grandchildren Roger Romage and wife, Cheryl Romage of Lawrenceville, GA, Laura Whittaker Lumsden and husband Bobby of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Andy Whittaker and wife Vicki of Cary, NC; great-grandchildren Heather Romage, Matthew, Caleb, and James Lumsden, Ethan and Emma Whittaker, two god-children of Kenny Powers: Paymon and Parsa Abedi, a brother Larry Cook and wife Donna of Mohall, ND and many nieces and nephews. Two very special friends, Connie Moody and Alan Profitt. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm, Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Sophia Freewill Baptist Church, Sophia, WV. Visitation will be at 1pm, prior to the service at the church. Pastor Robert Carter and Rev. James Whittaker will be officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be, Kenny Powers, Andy Whittaker, Bobby Lumsden, Roger Romage, Larry Cook, Alan Profitt. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
