Born in Madeira, Portugal, daughter of the late Jose A. and Umbelina O. (Neto) Mendes, she immigrated in March 1967 to New Bedford and then moved to South Dartmouth. She became a proud U.S. citizen in 1988.
Mrs. DaSilva worked as a cleaner in the textile mills and later worked at home as a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth. Mrs. DaSilva enjoyed gardening, cooking, and knitting. She was happiest being around her family and laughing with people.
She is survived by four daughters, Maria DosReis and her husband Domingos of S. Dartmouth, Cecilia Fernandes and her husband Jose of New Bedford, Olinda Gendreau and her husband Andre and Umbelina Gendreau and her husband Edmond all of Somerset; a brother, Albert Mendes of Portugal; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by eleven siblings.
Her Funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m. from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to Susan G.
