Alfred J. Landry, age 83, of Crystal River, FL died peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2015 surrounded by family at his daughter’s home in Dartmouth after an inspiring and courageous battle against cancer.
Son of the late Alfred J. and Liliane M. (Giroux) Landry, Al was born and raised in Central Falls and Providence, RI. A United States Navy Veteran, Chief Petty Officer Landry served in the Navy for over 20 years and was stationed in Uruguay and Venezuela, retiring in 1971 as a Store Keeper Chief. He went on to work as a civilian in Iran repairing Navy ships for Stanwick Corp from 1971 to 1976. He then enrolled in SMU, now UMass-Dartmouth and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1979 and his Master’s degree from Bryant College in 1980 under the GI Bill. Upon graduation, he worked as a civil servant logistician with the Navy for 25 years, retiring in 2006.
Al’s military career took him all over the world, but he was proud to call Dartmouth his home for many years. He lived in Springfield, VA from 1982 until 2006 when he moved to Crystal River, FL after retirement, and back to Dartmouth this past December to be with his family. He made friends wherever he went and stayed in touch with many. In Crystal River, he looked forward to hosting his semi-annual “Sausage Assessment Sessions” and “Come and Have a Cup of Christmas Cheer” neighborhood get-togethers.
Big Fred, as he was affectionately called in his younger days, was a proud Republican who enjoyed volunteering with veterans until he became ill. He loved to play softball and tennis, bowled a 300 game and enjoyed fishing with his grandkids on his boat, the "CPO's GIG". He was also a great marksman and had a fondness for firearms.
He leaves his daughters: Laura A. Joshi and her husband Ravi S. of Dartmouth, MA, Lynn A. Tyndall and her husband Robert F. of Osterville, MA, and Ann L. Landry of the Metro, DC area; 5 beloved grandchildren: Leena R., Anjana R. and Nikhil R. Joshi, Christina M. Tyndall and Kian P. Singh; his former wife, Janice S. (Harwood) Landry Miranda of Dartmouth, MA, and his German shepherd, Jazz. He was also the father of the late Alfred J. Landry, Jr.
His Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 20, 2015 at 11:00 am in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA followed by burial with Military Honors in Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI.
