Eleanor, also known as Leonora was born in Dartmouth, MA. She was the daughter of the late Joaquim and Maria (Veigas) Carvalho. She was a lifelong resident and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
Eleanor was a true neighborhood legend—the one and only "yoohoo!" queen, whose cheerful call could echo down the block like a joyful alarm clock. She had a heart as big as her voice, lighting up whenever she was around her family, especially the babies—nothing brought out her megawatt smile like tiny toes and giggles. A wizard with a needle, she loved sewing and knitting cozy treasures for her loved ones. And in her later years, she and her husband became adventure pros, trading in their couch for a camper and chasing sunsets one campsite at a time.
She is survived by her children, Dennis and his wife Doreen Lewis of New Bedford, Barry and his wife Patti Lewis of Dartmouth, Darlene and her husband Garry Branchaud of Freetown; grandchildren, Dennis, Tracey, Heather, Wendy, Michael, Dana and the late Joshua D. Branchaud; great grandchildren, Katie, Jack, Makaiya, Selena, Emma, Devin, Ryan, Aaron, Nathan, Madison; great great grandchildren, Addie, Ally, and Nyah. She was also a motherly figure to her niece and nephew, Amelia, Eleanor and David. She was the sister of the late Emily, Rosie, Elsie and Jack Carvalho.
Her funeral will be Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 795 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. For online tribute/directions: www.waring-sullivan.com.
