Frederick J. Marland, 88, of Dartmouth, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Pacheco) Marland, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Robert F. and Isabelle I. (Stevens) Marland. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, Class of 1956, and proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he worked on aircraft as an aviation mechanic.
Following his military service, Fred continued his career in aviation and maintenance. He served for many years as Director of Maintenance at Fram Corporation before later working for Continental Express and Island Airlines, where he remained until his retirement. His work took him around the country, but no matter where life led him, he always found joy in working with his hands and fixing things.
Fred had a lifelong passion for automobiles and airplanes. If someone needed their car repaired, Fred was the man to call. He was always willing to lend a hand and use his skills to help others, never hesitating to share his knowledge or offer assistance to someone in need. His generous spirit and willingness to help were among the many qualities that endeared him to family and friends.
Fred enjoyed spending time outdoors, tending to his yard and garden, and creating beautiful pieces of scrimshaw. He also loved cooking, especially Portuguese and Italian dishes, and cherished memories of the clambakes he enjoyed with his brother and family back in the day. A natural storyteller, Fred loved reminiscing about the past and sharing stories of his many experiences. He had a good sense of humor and could be quite the jokester, bringing laughter to those around him. Above all, Fred was a good-hearted man who took pride in helping others and caring for the people he loved.
In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara, Fred is survived by his loving children, Jennifer Marland of Dartmouth and Todd Marland and his partner, Betsy Johnson of Dartmouth; his grandchildren, Robbie Marland and his wife, Tara, of Bourne, Tyler Marland and his partner, Leighann Enos, of Dartmouth, Jacob Pacheco of Dartmouth and Derrick Marland of Nantucket; his great-grandchildren, Vanna Marland of Bourne and Emersyn Marland of Dartmouth. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Robert Marland and Graham Marland, both of Dartmouth.
His visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at South Dartmouth Cemetery.
