George Ramos, 79, of New Bedford, went to be with Our Lord & Savior on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Maria Bernadette (Correia) Ramos.
Regrettably, his eldest brother, Daniel Ramos of New Bedford, passed three days after. He is survived by his brother, Antonio Ramos of Florida.
Born in Acushnet, he was the son of the late Antonio M. and Emilia (Albuquerque) Ramos. Though he lived the majority of his life with his family in New Bedford, George spent nearly 21 years serving his country honorably in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1981 as a TSGT. During his military career, he was stationed at several places, including Thailand during the Vietnam Era. Of all his tours of duty, his most favorite was Torrejon Air Base in Madrid, Spain; so much so that he and his family spent TWO tours there during the 1970s. After his military retirement, he was employed by the United States Postal Service, Fall River, until he retired.
George was a member of the Moose Lodge and a longstanding member of the Centro Luzo Club, and took pride in following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a Board Member. In addition, he and his wife spent many Thanksgivings preparing meals for the disadvantaged with the SCA (Sociedade Cultural Acorean). His favorite pastimes were Traveling, Golf, Nascar, and Karaoke. He also loved sharing his knowledge of military aircraft with his sons, grandsons, and nephews. Nascar and Golf were MOST enjoyed by him when he shared it with his sons. He was best known for Karaoke, which he happily supplied, for HOURS, at most family gatherings, making sure he had music from many genres and generations. It was most looked forward to by every member of the family. He loved traveling with Bernadette annually, to Florida and other states to visit family. It was very rare to see either one of them without the other. For years, when his grandchildren were younger, his Sunday ritual was to bring donuts and malasadas to them and endure getting his “hair done” with multiple barrettes by his youngest granddaughter. These are some of his grandchildren’s most cherished memories.
George, by all accounts, was a very unique, caring, and selfless man who was always willing to give you the shirt off his back and the shoes off his feet, and touched the lives of all who knew him. He was always happy to share his stories of life experiences, especially with his grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his huge heart, giving spirit, and the way his smile would light up a room, not to mention his witty sense of humor, endless puns, dad jokes, and his knack for improv.
In addition to his loving wife Bernadette, he is survived by his children; Timothy Richmond and his wife Andrea of Rehoboth, Rhonda Ramos and her husband Michael Barros of TN, Richard Ramos and his wife Tracey of New Bedford, and Darrin Ramos of NC; his grandchildren; Alexa of Rehoboth, Michael and Janelle of TN, and Jarryd of Fairhaven, his great-grandchild Braxton of TN; and MANY nieces and nephews who he cared for as his own.
The family is kindly requesting that no flowers be sent and contributions in Mr. Ramos’ honor may be made to: "Smile Train", www.smiletrain.org or "The Greater Boston Food Bank", www.gbfb.org
