

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late James and Dorothy (Melling) Craig, he had resided in Dartmouth since 1951.
Mr. Craig proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He flew bombing missions in the Pacific as a top turret gunner on a B24 Liberator earning an air medal.
Mr. Craig received an Associate’s degree from Lowell Tech and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from UMass Dartmouth. A licensed Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer, Mr. Craig worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works (now the Department of Transportation) for over thirty years, rising through the ranks to District Maintenance Engineer at the time of his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Craig was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed camping with his family and held a lifelong passion for sailing, building his own sailboat at age 15. His friendly, outgoing nature will be greatly missed as well as his sense of humor.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan E. Craig of Dartmouth; two sons, James J. Craig and his companion Ellen G. Smigel of Fairhaven and Jeffrey D. Craig of East Providence; a sister, Audrey Jean Leaver of Hyannis; and two grandchildren, Justine M. Alves and Christopher C. Alves and his fiancé Dr. Danielle Kolitz; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, January 9, 2022 from 2-4 pm at the Waring-Sullivan Home, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA. His Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 11 am, at St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, in Bourne. Masks are required to attend services.
