

John P. Gonçalves, 67, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2023 surrounded by family following a long courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was the beloved husband of the late Suzanne M. (Avelar) Gonçalves who passed away in 2019.
Born in Cova, Figueira da Foz, Portugal, the son of the late Joao Gonçalves and Maria da Encarnacao Pereira Ramos, he came to the United States in 1984 and settled in New Bedford.
Mr. Gonçalves had worked as a commercial fisherman aboard several fishing boats in New Bedford most recently the Kathy Marie.
John was a loving husband to his wife Sue who he cared for during her battle with MS from 2012-2019. They loved to take rides along the New England coastline, admiring the beauty of Gloucester, Provincetown, Horseneck Beach, Fort Phoenix and Fort Taber. He enjoyed working in his yard, doing home projects, traveling and socializing at the Fisherman Club. John was a big fan of Sporting Portugal. He loved family gatherings and often served scallop, lobster and roast beef meals. He worked very hard to support his family and accomplish as much as he did. John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include a son, Josh Gonçalves of New Bedford; two sisters, Rosa Gonçalves and her son Joel and Cristina Gonçalves and her daughter Susana; a sister-in-law Marie and her husband Ray and their son Ryan and his wife Marie; and several cousins in Portugal. He was predeceased by his in-laws Antonio and Maria Avelar and his wife's grandmother Deolinda S. Dias.
