John Medeiros, 97 of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31st in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 25th, 1928 in North Fairhaven to the late Manuel and Maria daluz Medeiros.
He is the former husband of Dorothy Pacheco Medeiros, devoted husband of the late Margaret Foster Medeiros and loving widower of Muriel Tomlinson Medeiros.
He was educated in the Fairhaven school system before entering the Massachusetts State Guard during World War II. He later enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and engaged in active combat in the Korean War. "John was awarded numerous medals honoring many heroic feats while serving in the Marine Corp." He was the true epitome of a Marine “Semper Fi”.
He was the sole surviving founder of the Thomas Livesey Memorial Club and was extremely proud of playing football on the original Blue Devils team.
Having been raised on a farm he showed compassion for all animals. To many, John was known as “The Dog Whisperer”. He could train any dog to respond to his commands with just the tone of his voice. Throughout his life he had 9 dogs with his canine princess “Miss Molly” being his true companion to his final days.
A carpenter by trade he worked with various construction companies building homes for many decades in local communities. He later changed his vocation and moved to North Attleboro where he was the director of maintenance at the Balfour Company for 20 years. After retirement he moved to Dartmouth and never lost his passion to build. He would often do projects for the neighbors or make doll furniture and toys in his workshop with his great grandchildren. If you were lucky, you left his house with one of his coveted bird houses.
He was a very active member at Grace Episcopal Church and was delighted he was their eldest parishioner for many years.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Medeiros Grenon (Francis) and Linda Medeiros DaSilva (Steven). Two stepsons Roger LeComte (Pia) and Mark LeComte (Lori). Two stepdaughters, Susan Grant and Joyce Spence-Rogers (Jerry).
His grandchildren, John Paul Sladewski (fiancée Allison), Kate Sladewski Mellace (Sal), Brian Sladewski (Amanda) and Kasey Grenon Potts (Jay).
Great Grandchildren Sophie, Scarlett, Luke, Salvie and Kennedy. Along with several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his eight siblings, brothers Joseph, Jesse, James and Antone Medeiros and sisters Isabel Jardin, Hilda Correia, Margaret Devlin and Elizabeth Reynolds.
