Jorge Arruda

Jorge Arruda, 86, of Dartmouth passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 11, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Sara (Pacheco) Arruda with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in St. Michael Azores, the son of the late Francisco and Mariana (Raposo) Arruda he grew up there before traveling into Canada and finally settling in Dartmouth. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Dartmouth.
Mr. Arruda worked as a dental technician and his passion was being on the water since he was a young man. Jorge was an accomplished sailor and he was a licensed captain. Jorge was skilled in celestial navigation and made a transatlantic sail. Mr. Arruda was a former member of the Fairhaven Coast Guard Auxiliary. He had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed his Hot Rods.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children, Tammy Arruda and her partner Jim Cousens of Fairhaven and Richard Arruda and his wife Lisa of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Tyler, Kayla, and Collin; a sister, Helena Corey of Fairhaven. He was the brother of the late David Arruda, Humberto Arruda, Maria Arruda, and Luisa Arruda.
His funeral will be Friday, March 17, 2023 at 9 a.m. from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 795 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1213 Kempton St., New Bedford. Visitation will be Thursday 4-7 p.m. For online tribute/directions: www.waring-sullivan.com.
