He was known as “Lou” to his family & friends and was born in Canada on February 25, 1944 . The son of Patrice & Cecile and the younger brother to sister Jeanine and brother Yves.
He spent two consecutive summers in the United States at a cousin’s home, Laurent (Pat) Gregoire & his wife Theresa when he was in his mid-teens. Following his second summer he decided that he did not want to return to Canada, so the Gregoire’s welcomed him in. It is there that his hard work ethic and desire to succeed began, as he worked full time for Pat in his plastering company. That was also the beginning of a lifelong friendship with his cousin Lenny (Pat and Theresa’s son). Lenny continued to be a steadfast friend and visited with Lucien regularly throughout his illness and provided much comfort to him and his family.
Fast forward, early 1970’s, Lucien started Cape Cod Lathing and Plastering with his partner Joe Tremblay. They grew the business to over 100 employees and became arguably the #1 drywall subcontractor in the Southcoast. In the early 1990’s Lucien split off and started his own business, Delta Drywall. He was very proud to have his son-in-law, Steve, by his side. They were very close, like father and son, & shared similar work ethics and interests.
His daughter Michelle soon joined the company & Delta Drywall morphed into Robert Commercial Construction. His daughter Sue is also part of the company. Lucien lived his life with great integrity and honesty and that is how he ran his company. He valued his employees and considered many of them family. Lucien loved to work and loved his company. He placed great value on being conscientious, doing a good days work, and being reliable. He was the hardest working guy in the business!
Lucien also studied hard and became a US Citizen in 1994.
As time moved on, Steve and Michelle were successfully managing the company, all thanks to Lucien’s strong mentoring, leadership, and wisdom, he finally began to pull back from the company. He began to enjoy more time at his second home in West Palm Beach, FL with his partner Sharon and their beloved dog Simon and then Spencer. He enjoyed going to the beach, walking, riding his bike, relaxing in the afternoons with Sharon, “puttering around”, and a cold beer at the end of the day. Lucien and Sharon’s relationship spans over 30 years and she loved and cared for him until the very end.
Lucien, built a beautiful home on the water in Fairhaven that he was very proud of. It was the gathering place for both family and friends. There was always a friend stopping in to hang out and enjoy a cold beer and conversation. His family loved his great cooking especially on Sundays. He cooked for an army and family always left with leftovers of his famous pot roast or “stain the bowl soup”. Sunday afternoons often began with Bloody Mary’s, watching Nascar, golf, or football & hanging by the beach or patio. Lucien also loved working in his yard, especially on his excavator. He loved seeing the results of his hard work and that brought him great joy.
Although Lucien was known for work, work, work he also had a softer silly side. He would often place strange things on his head (or maybe Sharon did that!), make goofy faces, and burst into laughter. He loved to hug his family & bring them in close; “get over here!”. He was very proud to be a grandpa to Sydney aka “ The Package” & Zachary aka “The Rubber Ball”. He loved taking them for rides on the gator and spoiling them.
Lucien spent many Saturdays where Zach worked alongside him. He was able to pass down his knowledge, skills, and strong work ethic while creating memories of time spent together. Of course, working Saturdays always included lunch, and they enjoyed that together as well.
He loved getting visits from his daughters while in Florida and playing Uno, hitting the movies, and heading out to dinner. The Waterway Restaurant was one of his and the families’ favorite spots. He was surprised there for one of his birthdays by his daughters and grandkids. He was very gullible, as Sharon multiple times created bogus scenarios to throw Lucien off the trail of birthday surprises! There were hundreds of breakfasts after church, business lunches, and dinners shared.
Lucien loved God; daily prayer and Mass were a priority in his life. He was a minimalist with his words but his actions spoke volumes. Although he was very successful, he was extremely humble. He often drove the oldest vehicle and would not hesitate to jump in and start working, even helping someone that he was paying to do a job for him. He was extremely generous with his time and talents and that generosity touched many, many lives. Anyone who knows him would say how much he helped them over the years.
Lucien is survived by his partner Sharon Sylvia ( Dartmouth), his two daughters, Michelle & her husband Robert Hoyt (Dartmouth) & Suzanne and her husband Steve Lima ( Dartmouth), his granddaughter , Sydney and her husband Kieran Walsh ( Jersey City, NJ) and his Grandson Zachary Lima (Dartmouth). He is predeceased by both of his siblings.
Lucien had a son, Christopher who passed away in 1995.
