He was the beloved husband of the late Doris (Johnson) Barrett. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lillian (Hayford) Barrett.
Norman served in the United States Coast Guard for 24 years and attained the rank of Master Chief Radioman ( RMCM). He was a proud Vietnam veteran who traveled the world aboard ship. He greatly enjoyed his years in the Coast Guard and carried the friendships and experiences from his service throughout his life. He also drove a school bus for the Town of Dartmouth and worked in banking.
Norman was a sharp and genuine man who had a way of keeping life simple and letting his actions speak for themselves. There was a quiet light about him that people were naturally drawn to. Organized, punctual, and social, he valued conversation, connection, and time spent with the people he cared about—often over a cup of coffee at one of his favorite local coffee shops.
He enjoyed playing horseshoes and shuffleboard, walking at Horseneck Beach and Buttonwood Park, swimming and proudly followed his beloved New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He also served as a commander for VFW Post 9059.
Norman was a devoted dog lover and took great pleasure in the simple things in life. Above all, his family was his pride and joy. He especially cherished time spent with his grandchildren, holiday gatherings, family dinners, and, of course, enjoying plenty of desserts around the table. His warmth, companionship, wisdom and love for his family will be deeply missed.
Norman is survived by his loving daughter, Deborah Barrett, and her wife, Wendy Almeida, his granddaughters Jen Peters and husband Al Peters, Rachel Lamontagne and great granddaughters Reagan Salley, Callie Peters, and Rachel Peters, all of Dartmouth and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Grace Barton, Kathleen Ohman, and Thomas Barrett.
Norman leaves behind a lifetime of memories, friendships, service, and family traditions that will be treasured by all who knew and loved him.
His Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 10:00am to 12:00pm in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748. Burial is Private.
