Robert J. A. Gagnon, Sr., 86, of Dartmouth, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, July 10, 2026. He was the cherished husband of Debbie (Seelye) Gagnon, with whom he would have celebrated 46 years of marriage.
Born in New York City, Robert was the son of the late Adrien and Marianne (Bourgoin) Gagnon. He spent most of his life in Dartmouth, where he built a life centered on family, faith, friendship, and service to others. He was a devoted member of Cornerstone Community Church and remained actively involved in his church community.
Robert proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Army, making military service his career. Upon retiring from military service, he continued working for his country in a civilian position as the Facilities Manager for all army bases from Maine to Connecticut with the Army Corp of Engineer, retiring at age 65. His commitment to his fellow veterans continued long after his active-duty service. He served as Commander of American Legion Post 307 in Dartmouth and treasured the friendships with his military comrades. Some of his happiest moments were sitting with friends or family over a good cup of coffee, sharing stories and conversation, playing golf, cards, and dominoes.
Music was another great joy in Robert’s life. Blessed with an unforgettable singing voice, he was known to many as the leader of the band The Coastal’s. His love of music and his voice brought happiness to countless people throughout the years.
Above all else, Robert’s family was the center of his world. Nothing was more important to him than those he loved. His warm smile, joyful spirit, and naturally happy demeanor made an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. The love, laughter, and memories he leaves behind will be treasured for generations.
In addition to his beloved wife, Debbie, Robert is survived by his three children, Robert J. A. Gagnon, Jr. and his wife, Kim, of California; Melissa Zeitz and her husband, Marc, of Dartmouth; and Valerie A. Sullivan and her husband, Tim, of Virginia. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert Gagnon III and his wife, Jessica; Aaron Gagnon and his wife, Ashley; Cody Gagnon and his wife, Amanda; Lucas Gagnon; and Martin W. Zeitz; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The youngest of 16 children, Robert was the last surviving member of his large family of siblings, marking the close of a remarkable generation of the Gagnon family.
