Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Joseph and Maria (Pina) Barboza, he grew up in Boston and returned to New Bedford where he has lived ever since.
Stanley recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Hawthorn Country club with more than 100 guests, where he was also honored by the Coast Guard and Lightship Services as the oldest member of the U.S. Lightship Service. He served as an engineman in the U.S. Coast Guard for 28 years, retiring in 1957.
Stanley was a loyal Red Sox fan and got to see his team win the World Series on Wednesday. He loved cruises and Mercedes Benz, was a handicraftsman having built two houses and until recently performed most of the maintenance work on his home. Stanley was sharp to the end, knowledgeable about current events and an avid reader of political nonfiction.
Surviving in addition to his wife Mary; a son, Robert Barboza and wife Maureen of Bridgewater; daughters, Marie DePina and husband Henry of Fairhaven, Amy Seiders and husband Edward of New Bedford and Denise Arsenault and husband Peter of Rochester; 11 grandchildren, Craig, Christopher, Jeffrey, Brett, Eric, Jonathan, Brian, Elizabeth, Erin, Keith and Steven; 11 great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Rachel, Jacob, William, Sophia, Bryce, Abigail, Charles, Natalie, Dominic and Elias; a sister, Velma McLeod of Avon. He was predeceased by sisters, Emma Leighton, Mae Casey and Helen Zaborowski.
His Funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 9am from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 10am in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours Tuesday 5-8pm. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
