Born in Lynn, Massachusetts to the late Daniel and Elizabeth Buckley, Steve was raised in Swansea, MA where he graduated from Case High School. He attained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from UMass Dartmouth and a Master of Environmental Engineering from UMass Amherst. He and his wife made Dartmouth their home in 1976.
As an environmental engineer, Steve designed and installed wastewater systems for over five decades. Never a movie skyline he couldn’t identify, never a restaurant he hadn't eaten at, traveling the country and beyond defined much of his life and career. An avid athlete and competitor, Steve loved golf, pickleball, cards, and swimming - a hobby that led to a job as a lifeguard at Horseneck Beach and a stint swimming competitively in college. He also enjoyed reading, walking, and wintering in Florida. Steve was an active member of the community, serving as a longtime board member at Child & Family Services, refereeing basketball for the DYAA, and coaching youth sports. He was proud of that work, but his family and friends always came first.
He was devoted to Deb, his partner in everything, and found his greatest happiness in the role of dad and grandfather. Fishing with his grandkids, sharing their stories and laughs whether they caught anything or not, was one of his favorite ways to spend his time.
In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by his daughter Kara and son-in-law Andrew Lenz, of Florida; his son, Christopher Buckley, of Dartmouth; his grandchildren, Ethan and Aria Lenz; his brother, Michael Buckley; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Daniel and Patrick Buckley.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. For online memorial and service updates, please visit www.waring-sullivan.com.
