Anne (Hennessey) Sorbie, 84, of South Yarmouth. MA died on February 22, 2020 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. Anne was born on August 2, 1935 to the late Thomas and Esther Hennessey (Dwyer) in Winchester, MA where Anne spent her childhood. After graduating from Winchester High School in 1953, she attended Vermont Junior College, the Perry Normal School, and Curry College. Upon graduation from Curry in 1958, she began her elementary school teaching career in North Reading, MA. After teaching in Boston area schools for the next 10 years, she relocated to South Yarmouth to teach in the Hyannis school system. Anne taught for another 17 years on Cape Cod, retiring in 1985. She deeply loved her profession and the eager young students she was introducing to classroom learning. While on a ski trip, Anne met Bill Sorbie, and the two were married in 1979. Anne & Bill enjoyed sailing, flying and socializing together until Bill passed away in 2009.
Anne was an active member of the Allen Harbor Yacht Club, and remained an avid fan of horses, bowling, Phil Mickelson, and Boston sports teams. Anne is survived by her stepson Chuck (Marj) Sorbie of Punta Gorda, FL and many step grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers James (Mercedes) Hennessey of Princeton, NJ and Thomas (Linda) Hennessey of Hilton Head Island, SC, as well as nieces Julie (John) Hennessey-Niland of Koror, Palau, Melissa Hennessey of Clinton, CT, and Carolyn (Greg) Hennessey Rose of Basking Ridge, NJ.
A celebration of Anne’s life will be held at a future date. Arrangements are being handled by the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in South Dennis, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Anne’s’ memory to a charity of your choice.
