Aura N. Cashen, age 93, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 2, 1926 in Managua, Nicaragua to her father, a prominent Congressman and her mother, a loving homemaker. She was the 9th child born to a large and loving family. Upon graduating high school, she was employed by the organization building the Pan American Highway. Having impressed her employers, she was encouraged to travel to the United States to further herself. In 1945 she arrived in the US and settled in Miami, Florida with relatives. Before leaving Nicaragua, her mother admonished her to be careful and to “stay away from sailors” as Aura was a beautiful young woman. However, after arriving in Florida, she met a young Irish sailor named Warner Cashen who was later to be become her husband in 1947.
Aura held many respectful positions in the workforce from stitching parachutes during WWII to bookkeeping. She was very active in the PTA, a member of long standing with the Harwich Junior Women’s Club and later in the Evening Division of the Women’s Club. She also taught Spanish at local schools as well as at Adult Education class. In addition, she was a former Special Deputy under Sheriff Bowes as well as the treasurer for the Bass River Rod & Gun Club. Her petite size and innocent expression hid a strong backbone and steadfast loyalty, not to mention she was an expert marksman. She ultimately finished her working years in the office of the Harwich Laundry, of which most recently, her daughters, Colleen (Cashen) Springer and Linda Cashen owned and operated after their father’s death.
Those that met Aura never forgot her. She had an infectious smile and was always a strong support system to her friends and family. She never gave up on seeing the beauty in life and chose to always be appreciative and humble.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Cashen of South Dennis; her daughter Colleen (Cashen) Springer of Harwich; her son-in-law Barry Springer of Harwich; her granddaughter Kelly Springer of South Dennis; her grandson Michael Springer and his wife Michelle of Deerfield Beach, FL, and her great-grandkids Jackson and Juliana Springer, both of Deerfield Beach, FL; her brother David Bonilla of Guatemala along with his wife, Myriam; her brother Jaime of Nicaragua and his wife, as well as many nieces and nephews both in the United States, Quebec, Canada and Guatemala.
The burial will be private per her wishes. Her daughters wish to invite family and friends to celebrate her life at the Winstead Inn in Harwich at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to VNA Hospice, 255 Independence Dr, Hyannis, MA 02601. For online condolences please visit www.doanebealamesdennis.com
