Augie's sudden death has seemed so unreal. He was one of the most positive, cheerful, warm and funny people we have known. We were lucky to have him as my Best Man at our wedding, and we were running buddies and shared the joys and laughs of early parenthood.
Our sons consider him an uncle and we have been close to Ian and Zach since each was born.
We know how much he loved Janet and we are deeply sad for the loss of Augie to all of you and all of us.

It is with deep grief and sorrow that our family mourns the passing of our friend and brother-in-law, August. We hold Janet, my sister, in our hearts and embrace.
We loved August. He brought joy, happiness, love, respect and a great deal of humor, generosity and fun into our lives.
We loved his New Jersey accent, his kindnesses to our grandchildren and even his impromptu dance moves while out in public, when he heard a song that he particularly liked. He deeply loved Janet and loved to tease her. They had many fun and happy times together.
Both Jan and August welcomed us into their home and lives for summer vacations and they visited us in Canada on numerous occasions. The world is a better place because August was in it. We will never forget him, but continue to mourn his sudden passing.

Two years later finally allowed us to visit again. After the crazy week of travel Jessie and I had overseas, seeing you both at the airport was a big sigh of relief! Thanks again for everything. We immediately felt at home and quickly fell in love with the Cape. Day trip adventures, shopping till we dropped (some of us anyway), great meals (authentic Cape Codders and lobster rolls), and the best company! Not to mention ending each amazing day by quizzing Alexa on the score and current events. What a trip!

We love you so much and Jessie always referred to you as Uncle August… Thank you for making her feel right at home with your sincerity and thoughtfulness. You were always thinking of others and your kindness and support of what we do will always be remembered.

Thank you for all the good times Auggie - we love you very much,

MJ and Jessie

Dear August

Knowing you was an absolute delight. The first time we met was on Griffith Street. Welcome to the Pankhurst family! I appreciated how you made time for everyone. After all we are not a small family but we sure know how to have f-u-n, and you didn't miss a beat. Good times were had by all. I remember your warmth and humor. I liked your clever Red Sox quips and let you know that we shared a love for Boston teams. You were wearing one of your stylish hats. I remember being so excited to come to the East Coast for a visit, but it took me a few years to make it out your way. In fact, I never did get to see the Marsh Cottage! But you know, Frog Tree Lane has a ring to it that I prefer...

Before I had the chance to come out to see you both, you dropped by during a West Coast tour and we were delighted to host you. Rosie and Benji approved and we had many laughs, conversations about our favourite teams, and enjoyed our favourite local craft beers. While taking in the perfect patio weather, we speculated about the future of politics and pondered our next travel destination bucket list item(s). Visiting the many cafes and scouring the thrift shops for the latest fashions, and making sure not to miss a single bookstore along the way. Those were just some of the highlights! We enjoyed amazing meals together and shared that famous limoncello - how was that pronounced again? So many fond memories in 'Sidney by the Sea' with you both. We knew another trip was in short order...

I knew August through Jan and Brittany. I am blessed to have spent time with an amazing man like August. One of my favourite vacations I have ever been on was with Brittany, Jan and August when we went to Brazil. During the vacation August was always cracking us up. I learned from August the many uses of Olive oil, he told me it was good for your skin, good for your hair, prevents hair loss, and is an all around cure for everything. I really enjoyed spending time with August and Jan together and loved hearing about their adventures together through Brittany.

My condolences to all of August’s friends and family.

We had the pleasure of getting to know August from spending a weekend at the cape. Even though it was only a few short days, we were so fond of his spirit, his stories and especially his self-deprecating jokes that we couldn’t wait to go back for another visit and spend more time together.

A fond memory I have of August was when I took a walk with him to the corner store to pick up the newspaper. He said hi to everyone and everyone knew his name. I could just feel the warmth he had for everyone. We talked about baseball and argued about the best team in the AL East. We couldn't decide who was better and left the argument open.

The funniest and most endearing memory I have of August was golfing. We could tell he was getting tired after a long day. Somewhere on the back nine, he shanked a tee-shot straight into the side of a house. Luckily no one was hurt, but August turned to look at the group and said “well, that’s it for me today", and rode the rest of the round.

August, you were always full of positive energy and we had such a great time getting to know you and your quirky sense of humour. We are saddened to see you go, friend, but you will always live on in our memories.

Jan, we are so sorry to hear about your loss. We wish we could be there with you and we're thinking about you a lot.

With love,
Christa and Henry

Shocked to hear the news of his passing, and my sincere condolences to Augie's family in this difficult time. Augie was a rare individual who genuinely cared for those in his sphere and treated you with consideration and respect.

I knew Augie at ELI Hospital in Greenport, NY. At the time I had just about one of the lowliest positions in the hospital, but was welcome in his office, sometimes chatting for an hour. He would ask my opinion on matters going on within the hospital, and listen with great care, making me feel like a peer. Always a gentleman.

I will certainly miss him, and am most sorry for your loss.

My favorite memory of Augie is in Key West in 2013 when he and Jan visited us. His charm, wit, and kindness to others is what I remember the most. I loved listening to his adventures as well as wondering what his next outfit would be. He was always so stylish, especially when he added a hat. I always made sure we had a bottle of Limoncello for him for after dinner. He and Jan had such a loving relationship and my heart goes out to her as Augie was a wonderful man. No matter where we were together, the trip was always memorable because of the two of them. RIP, Augie, as you are deeply loved and missed. Prayers to all of you, and God bless you.

When we heard the news of August's passing Brittany and I were devastated. August was like nobody I had ever met, or ever will. He was a truly unique personality.

We always enjoyed the time we spent with him and Jan in the Cape, or on vacations. He was always up to whatever excursion the group wanted to do, or to just relax and enjoy a cappuccino. Being an avid coffee drinker, I appreciated the different coffee's August would make for us when we were visiting him and Jan.

August was one of those people that always made people around him feel better. After talking with him I always felt better and inspired, and will miss him dearly.

I took this photo when we were visit Jan and August at Little Gasparilla Island in Florida. We made some great memories there that Brittany and I will never forget.

August was a one-in-a-million guy who lived life to the fullest. He always had a witty saying or something to make you smile. He loved "Janet" (as he called her) with all of his heart. He made you feel as if you were the only person in the room. He was thoughtful and kind and shared his enthusiasm for life with anyone he came in contact with. Our entire family, Frank, Shannon, Sean, Lauren and Matthew DiPietro, will miss him dearly. He was a treasure on earth.
