May 19, 1947October 27, 2020

Christine Laura De Liso, 73, of East Dennis, passed peacefully Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

Born and raised in Detroit, MI, she was one of five daughters of the late Vincent De Liso and Ann (Machura) De Liso. After attending Wayne State University, she moved to New York City and began her career in banking at City Bank. In 1976 she joined the United Nations and worked 27 years. During Christine’s time in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations she served field missions in Cambodia, Rwanda and Somalia. After her service in the field, Christine was appointed the Director of Administration for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, headquartered in The Netherlands. Her contributions to the United Nations helped to bring peace to many people across the world.

Upon her retirement in 2003, she built her dream home on Nantucket and lived with her 2 dogs and 3 cats, who she loved dearly. She was a passionate and avid gardener, deeply knowledgeable of all types of plants and trees, and was an amazing cook who loved to spend time in the kitchen. When she was not found in the backyard working on her garden or in the kitchen, she was a highly active Volunteer including supporting Meals on Wheels, The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, A Safe Place, and Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals. She was awarded Nantucket’s Volunteer of the Year in 2010. In 2012 she moved to East Dennis.

Christine was an amazing sister, aunt and friend and is survived and will be deeply missed by her dog Mocha, her 2 sisters, Annette Webster of Baldwin, MI and Gabrielle De Liso of Las Vegas, NV; her cousin Roger De Liso of Rochester Hills, MI; her nieces and nephews, Laura Vanvleet of Baldwin, MI, Darryl Webster of Conover, NC, Michelle Moore of Grand Haven, MI, George Carion of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Jennifer Lassin of Detroit, MI, and her numerous great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Christine was predeceased by her sisters Suzie Carion and Theresa Rovito.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).

I am so sad to hear about Christine's passing. We were neighbors on Nantucket and became friends when we shared the care of a two day old kitten my sister found in someone's yard. Christine named the kitty Cricket because of her adorable little chirps. We shared her for a couple of weeks back and fourth as the care was quite intense and required feedings every two hours all night.
We both had multiple animals at that point and could not keep her. We both got weepy when we took her to the MSPCA and decided that if she was there for longer than four days we would come get her. Thankfully she was snapped up immediately and we were so happy. We ran into each other frequently and walked our dogs together, she was a wonderful person, I was sad when she decided to move and even sadder now.

I worked with Christine at the animal shelter on Nantucket. She was one of our most dedicated volunteers. At that time, she was "a cat person," and she'd spend time with each of the cats in our main cat room, brushing them and talking to them, and ensuring each one had the attention he or she needed. I had the pleasure of being in Christine's beautiful Nantucket home, caring for her own cats when she was away, and enjoyed the magical garden she created there. Christine, I and the animals will miss you. Safe Travels.

Christine and I became close friends when she moved to the Cape. We were neighbors and then became best buds. We shared the love of our pets with daily walks together. We shared a lot of good times going to dinners, concerts, movies, or just being together. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I was so sorry to hear of this today , I have been Christine’s hairdresser since her move to Dennis . We have enjoyed so many talks and laughs together . At the salon we were talking about her just Friday , very concerned and not knowing . She had a friend call and cancel her appointment a few weeks ago and she has been in our thoughts since . A dear dear woman ...

Aunt Cream Puff will be missed by her great nieces and nephews, and we still make blueberry muffins in Michigan, minus her secret ingredients of "sea air and lots of love." They will never taste the same as hers ❤.
