
Edward “Ned” Hudson, retired New York Times reporter, passed away on October 10, 2023 in his Cape Cod home. He was 98. His wife of 65 years, Jean, predeceased him in 2015. His sister, Evelyn Ryan, predeceased him in 2007.
Mr. Hudson was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 22, 1925. He studied aviation mechanics in high school and worked as a “line boy,” servicing private planes at the old Rockaway, Queens Airport. He proudly served in the Marine Air Corps in World War II and received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze star after the capture and defense of Guadalcanal.
As a reporter for the New York Times for 40 years he specialized in news of transportation and aviation, covering aviation from the inception of the jet age to the introduction of jumbo jets. He later wrote from the New York City suburbs about such problems as inadequate commuter rail service and aircraft noise around local airports. Ned & Jean were former residents of West Nyack, NY.
After retiring, Ned drove the Cape Cod “B-Bus” for many years. He was a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster, MA. He described the joy and grief of caring for his wife Jean while she struggled with Alzheimer's disease in a book called “Love Lane.” He went on to write other stories for his family in a book called “The Breadbox.”
Ned is survived by his five children: Paul (Clare) Hudson of Fort Mill, SC, Peggy (Mark) Whalen of Warwick, NY, Jim (Fay) Hudson of South Dennis, MA, Kathy (Neil) Mendell of Westwood, NJ & Susan (Doug) Burton of Hanover, MA. He was also a proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren: Bryan, Elisabeth, Jennifer, Talena, Eric, John, Amy, Matthew, Julie, Joelle, Gregory, Christopher, David & Hannah as well as 23 great grandchildren: Adelaide, Nadia, Sydney, Ryley, Luke, Nathaniel, Soren, Payton, Reagan, Kellen, Shay, Landon, Caleb, Chase, Lana, James, Liam, Jacob, Julian, Jace, Luciana, Lyla, Jovalie.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sight Loss Services at https://sightloss.org/. Visitation will be held at Doane Beal and Ames in South Dennis on Tuesday, October 17 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Cape, Brewster on Wednesday, October 18 at 11 AM followed by burial at Oakridge Cemetery.
