Eleanor Agnes Brennan

Born in Boston on December 18, 1929, to Mark John Keaney and Sarah Mary (Chisam) Keaney, Eleanor grew up primarily in Springfield, Massachusetts, the oldest of three children. She lost both of her parents while still a young woman and assumed considerable responsibility for her youngest brother, David. Those early experiences helped shape the fiercely independent, resourceful and curious woman she became.

Eleanor’s lifelong love of children began as a teenager working at the Children’s Study Home in Springfield. She attended Wheelock College and American International College and became an elementary school teacher, later substitute teaching and teaching CCD. But teaching extended far beyond the classroom. Eleanor loved to learn and share what she knew, passing along everything from sewing and setting a proper table to skiing and the confidence to try something new. One cousin remembers Eleanor inspiring her own decision to become a teacher.

Skiing would change Eleanor’s life. While teaching, she worked weekends at Mount Snow in exchange for room, board and skiing. The sport led her to a handsome redhead named Richard “Dick” Brennan. They married February 11, 1961, and shared 49 years together until his death in 2010. Skiing became a family tradition and one Eleanor enthusiastically shared, introducing many other families to the sport.

Eleanor and Dick made homes in Wilbraham, Massachusetts; Yardley, Pennsylvania; West Brookfield, Massachusetts; and Pinckney, Michigan, before retiring to East Dennis, where Eleanor lived longer than anywhere else. Wherever she went, she made friends and became part of her community, volunteering through her church, hospital guild, political campaigns and civic projects. She enjoyed skiing, sailing, golf and bridge and was a gifted seamstress, knitter and crafter whose handmade Santas, elves and unforgettable “sneaker socks” became treasured gifts.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Kathy); her brothers, J. David Keaney and his wife Christine, and Mark Joseph Keaney and his wife Johann; her brothers’ many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.

Although Eleanor had no grandchildren of her own, generations of family knew and loved her as “Aunt Eleanor.” She enthusiastically embraced the children and grandchildren of her brothers and friends, welcoming them into her home for sewing lessons, visits and adventures. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dick, and their son, Richard Bernard Brennan Jr., stillborn in 1965.

A graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Dennis, Massachusetts, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, followed by a celebration of Eleanor’s life for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Cod Times Neighbors Fund, which provides assistance to Cape and Islands residents in need.
