Libby Miles, a recent resident of Liberty Commons in Chatham, Massachusetts died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday, December 10. Born and raised in Evanston, Illinois, Libby graduated from Evanston Township High School and attended Northwestern University. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
She was the wife of Thomas Samuel Miles for 64 years and the mother of three daughters: Randi Long of Lafayette, CA., Becki Whittington of Broomfield, CO; and Lesli Kiple of Plantation, FL.
Libby enjoyed designing gardens and homes in Chevy Chase, MD; Westport, CT; Colorado Springs, CO; and Osterville, MA. Besides being an avid gardener with her husband, she was an activist on behalf of the environment and all animals- especially cats. She loved traveling, reading, and collecting antiques. She had a deep curiosity about the world, and her interests were wide and varied. She truly was a Renaissance woman.
She took special pleasure and pride in her family. Besides her daughters, Libby is survived by six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two sons-in-law. Libby was the sister of the late Helen Grassick of East Dennis and the late Frank Hanson of Saddle River, NJ.
A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, Dec. 13 at Doane, Beal, and Ames Funeral Home at 10 a.m. and will be followed by burial at Quivet Neck Cemetary in East Dennis, MA. Family will also celebrate Libby's 90 years of a life well-lived in the summer of 2013, when family members return to Libby's beloved Cape Cod, her home for 29 years.
