Francis W. Harkins, 94, died peacefully on March 21, 2012 after living gracefully with Alzheimer’s. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Margaret (nee Power) and leaves behind four children, Nancy, Barbara, Francis, Karen (Martin) and the memory of his youngest son, David, as well as 8 grandchildren and one great grandson.
Frank’s fondest memories were of the service he gave to his country in WWII where he was a master sergeant in the Americal Division of the 23rd Infantry stationed in Guatacanal. Upon returning to civilian life, he married Peg in 1946 and earned an accounting degree from Bentley College on the GI bill. In 1954, Frank and Peg moved to Dedham MA where they raised their family. Most nights Frank would be in his den doing private accounting work or taxes as well as working as an accountant for Thompson and Lichtner Engineering of Brookline for 30 years. Retirement brought Peg and Frank to West Harwich where they were able to enjoy their final years together.
Frank was a very caring and patient father and grandfather. He guided his children through life by being a shining example of what love and encouragement can offer. When his family was younger, Christmas was always made special by Frank. He let the grandchildren stick the bows from presents on to his face. As a young man, Frank was proud to have become an Eagle Scout. One grandson followed that path and earned the same honor. To the end, he was caring, polite and without complaint. His disease took much from him, but never his ability to show his affection and concern for those around him. He always ended a visit with “I love you” and that feeling was shared by all who knew and loved Frank. A Visitation will be held on Saturday March 24th at The Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home 260 Main St West Harwich from 9am-10:30am followed by a Funeral Mass At Holy Trinity Church W. Harwich at 11am. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Services of Cape Cod 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, Mass 02601
