Laurence "Larry" Lerner

September 12, 1942June 7, 2019

Yarmouth Port – Laurence "Larry" Lerner, 76, passed away at Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral, Florida on June 7, 2019, after valiantly fighting brain tumor regrowths for 15 years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sheryl (Kaplan) Lerner, his son Andrew of Orlando, FL, his brother Elliot (Helene), and sister Nancy (Larry) Hurwitz. Many nieces and nephews.

Larry was born in Middleboro, MA, to Dr. Benjamin Lerner and Esther (Goldsmith) Lerner. After graduating Middleboro High School, he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Education from Bridgewater State College, his Master of Education from Northeastern University, and CAGS Degree from Northeastern University.

His career started as a math and science teacher at King Philip High School in Wrentham, MA. When he finished his counseling degrees, he was hired as a junior high school counselor in Randolph, MA. In 1970, upon hearing of a vacancy in the guidance department at Barnstable Vocational High School (soon to become Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich), Larry applied and spent 26 wonderful years on Cape Cod, having also been awarded in 1994, Massachusetts School Counselors Association “Counselor of the Year”. With relatives and warm weather in Florida, the next eight years were spent as Guidance Director at Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Florida. When medical issues struck both Sheryl and Larry, they decided to realize their dream of being snowbirds, still owning their home in Yarmouth Port.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Laurence Lerner to support Dr. David Reardon’s Research Fund at Dana-Farber Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. Very sorry to hear of Larry's passing. He was a good man and a great guidance counselor with a big heart and helped uncountable numbers of our Cape Tech students find success and a brighter future with his kind guiding hands. He will be missed here and in Florida at his other school where I am sure he did the same wonderful work.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. We have such fond memories of your trips to Bermuda. Mom and Dad loved spending time with you both and was always very excited when you were coming. Scott and I was just speaking of the time we went on the Sonesta property and found the rock you engraved with your names. Treasure each and every memory, which you have many. We love you, Della, Sylvia and Scott xoxo

I was very saddened today to read about Mr. Lerner's passing I was close to him in the old Barnstable Vocational high school. We stayed in touch with each other for some years after. He was a good friend and I will miss him dearly. Rest in peace Mr. Lerner. Bob Lovell
