Margaret Bassett passed away on September 14, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Margaret (Tubman) Bassett was born on Tubman Rd. in Brewster the daughter of Myron and Dorothy Tubman. She graduated Orleans H.S. and married her sweetheart Roland Bassett. Margaret and Roland were married for 63 years until Roland’s passing in 2012. Having lost the love of her life, Margaret’s sorrow was overwhelming. Margaret was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She leaves her 5 children: Darlene Bassett, Karen Dias and her husband Daniel, sons Roland Bassett, Jr. and his wife Holly, Russell and his wife Jane, Roger and his wife Nell. Her wonderful life blessed her with 16 grandchildren, James and Joel Stoneton, Shelly, Meghan, and Andrew Dias, Jennifer, Rebecca, Roland III, Isaiah, Rachel, and Jacob, Russell Jr., Randall, and Jessica, Kate, and Riley. In addition she was fortunate to have 20 great grandchildren: Abigail, Juliette, Haley, Kelsey, Landon, Lila, Michael, Justin, Francis, Roland IV, Lakota, Miles, Lucas, Sophie, Jacob, Molly, Joshua, Brody, Braxton, and Zoey.
She was a quiet soul and a hard worker. She attended to the accounting for Brewster Ice, managed the park store at Nickerson for many summers, and volunteered at the Brewster Elementary library as she truly loved children. She was a member of the Brewster Baptist Church for over 60 years. She taught Sunday school, worked diligently to manage and preserve the children’s church library, worked every month to prepare, print, and mail out the church newsletter, prepared the church pews for every Sunday’s church service, and helped out wherever she was needed. She was appropriately named the church mouse for all her years of selfless dedication. She enjoyed making caramel apples for the family at Halloween and pumpkin bread for the holidays.
She was a kind person, a genuine friend, and we will miss her warm smile. She will rest in peace beside her husband Roland at the Brewster Memorial Cemetery.
A private service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, S. Dennis. For online condolences, please visit www.doanebealames.com
