Maryann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was rooted in love, family, and the joy of everyday moments. She shared 55 years of marriage with the love of her life, Robert J. Berla—a partnership defined by deep devotion, laughter, and an unwavering bond. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, joy, and lasting memories.
Friendships were central to Maryann’s life. In later years, she found both fun and fellowship through bowling, cherishing the camaraderie as much as the game itself. She also remained close with friends from Curves and lifelong friends from her childhood. No matter how long she had known someone, Maryann offered the same care and attention, making her a truly cherished friend.
A lifelong hockey fan, Maryann proudly rooted for the New York Rangers from her New Jersey roots and later embraced the Boston Bruins. Whether at the rink or watching from home, she shared her enthusiasm with those around her.
The kitchen was Maryann’s happy place, always filled with the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. Her legendary Sunday sauce and meatballs were more than a tradition—they were the heart of family gatherings and the memories made around them.
Maryann had a gift for making people feel loved and remembered. She celebrated every holiday, birthday, and milestone with thoughtful detail, from the perfect cake to carefully chosen gifts and cards. Her faith was also an important part of her life; she found comfort in church, prayer, and reading the Bible, and she generously supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Maryann accepted Christ as her savior, so we are confident that she is with Jesus.
As a grandmother, Maryann’s love was unconditional and boundless. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and through her warmth, care and thoughtfulness, she made each of them feel deeply loved and special.
Maryann is survived by her beloved husband, Robert J. Berla; her children, Krissy Canastar and her husband Patrick, and Melissa Downie and her partner Tim Perron; and her grandchildren, Parker Benge (21), Eleanor Benge (20), Olivia Downie (9), and Cecelia Downie (7). She was predeceased by her parents, Rose and Anthony Finocchio.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 10, from 2:00–4:30 PM, with remembrance tributes to follow from 4:30–5:00 PM, at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in South Dennis, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maryann’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Maryann will be remembered for her warmth, devotion to family, and the joy she brought into every day. Her love, generosity, and spirit touched all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
