Born April 17, 1936, Paul was the son of the late Charles J. Masterson and Anna (Ford) Masterson of Weymouth, MA. Paul was graduated from Weymouth High School in MA and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. majoring in economics. Paul retired as a vice president in banking at age 46.
Mountain climbing with the Appalachian Mountain Club led Paul to connect with an international mountain climbing group, traveling with them to Nepal and climbing Mt. Elbrus. Paul reached the summit. Elbrus boarders on Russia, then the Soviet Union. The group was invited guests of the Soviet Union and traveled to a grand reception in Moscow, a highlight of Paul's life. Paul spent many hours reading and studying religion, philosophy, and politics which enabled him to become an enthusiastic and an enjoyable conversationalist. He was a good listener and interested in other's opinions and ideas. While building his house in Harwich, MA, Paul took up running to stay in shape and for social interactions. He was a charter member of the Cape Cod Athletic Club. Paul participated in many local races including marathons all over New England and Washington D.C.. It was at a road race that he met his wife, the former Shelley Whitehead. Besides running races, he and Shelley biked all over the Cape and Martha's Vineyard and enjoyed playing contract bridge both duplicate and social. Paul was a dad to Shelley's four children. Timberly of CA, Barry and Allan of MA, and Shelley Andrea (affectionately nicknamed "JR" by Paul) of TX. Two years into their marriage Paul and Shelley were blessed with the birth of their twin grandaughters (Jacqueline and Brianna). The twins and their mother, JR, have spent every summer since their birth with Paul and Shelley in the house that Papa built in Harwich. They created many happy memories. Paul was loved by many and will be missed.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Orleans, MA on July 14, 2020 at 11:00 am.
