Phyllis DiPietro, 84, of Yarmouth Port died peacefully at home on September 13, 2023, in the embrace of her devoted husband, Raymond. Her three daughters were by her side as she courageously fought a whirlwind battle with pancreatic cancer and showed us what it means to be simultaneously calm and brave. She was endlessly supportive and the most thoughtful mother her girls could ever have. She will never be forgotten and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her will forever remember her warm, kind, and generous spirit. She had a witty sense of humor, and she was gifted with the ability to instantly connect with people as soon as she entered a room.
Phyllis Jean (née Corey) was born in Binghamton, NY on November 4, 1938, to Earle and Kathryn (McDonnell) Corey, and spent most of her childhood years in Teaneck, NJ. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing (NJ) in 1960. During her lengthy career as a Labor and Delivery RN, at Framingham Union Hospital in Framingham, MA, and Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA, she loved to tell people that her calling was “birthing babies” and she frequently joked that she "does not do sick people.” Nothing brought her more joy than helping mothers bring new babies into the world.
Phyllis and Ray were married on June 3, 1961. They spent over 40 years in Framingham, MA, and Phyllis was very involved with the Parents’ Association at Marian High School, which their three daughters attended. They retired to Cape Cod in 2009, because she loved the beach, and chose to spend all of her remaining years living on the Cape. She and Ray lived for 14 years in the Deerfield neighborhood of Brewster, and recently moved to Heatherwood in Yarmouth Port in May.
During her time living on the Cape, Phyllis was a very enthusiastic Nine-Holer at Captains’ Golf Course, where she brought joy and happiness to all social events, was quick to welcome new members, and designed creative centerpieces for their gatherings. She loved to spend time laughing with her girlfriends! She enjoyed line dancing and bowling, and made no secret of her affinity for box wine. She was an avid bridge player, making many lifelong friends through the game. She loved to read, was a big supporter of the Brewster Ladies’ Library, and was an active, longtime member of Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster. She was well-known for making homemade meatballs to bring to any friends who needed support.
Above all, she was an unabashed fan of her five grandchildren. She was Granny to Emily and Drew Hardin, and Vavi to Madelyn (Maddy), Ryan, and Tyler Smith. She attended more of her grandchildren’s concerts, hockey games, soccer matches, swim meets, and performances than anyone can count. To her, there was no accomplishment that was not worthy of a celebration!
Phyllis is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Ray. She is also survived by her daughters Claire Sierra (husband Josiah Dean), Gail Hardin, and Julie Smith (husband Wayne Smith); and by her five grandchildren Emily Hardin, Drew Hardin, Maddy Smith, Ryan Smith, and Tyler Smith. She is also survived by her brother Dave Corey. She also leaves behind her five treasured nieces and nephews. We will all miss her every single day!
