Ray Nelson Stewart

June 29, 1934 – July 7, 2022
Obituary of Ray Nelson Stewart
IN THE CARE OF

Doane Beal & Ames

Ray Nelson Stewart, age 88, of Brewster, MA passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022 and will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Betty, and his twin children, Matthew Stewart and Annie (Stewart) Hartford.

Ray was the oldest of 5 children, born on June 29, 1934 in Pennsylvania where he was raised by his parents, Violet and Robert Stewart. Ray proudly served in the US Army for 4 years and received his college degree in Slavic Languages and Literature from Boston University in 1961. Ray worked as a Russian analyst for the CIA in Washington DC until the early 1970s, when he moved to Cape Cod, raised his children and has lived for more than 50 years. It was on the Cape where Ray met the love of his life, Betty (O'Riordan), 44 years ago. Ray and Betty were married in 1980 and have lived most of their married life in Brewster. Ray worked as a Real Estate Title Examiner at the Registry of Deeds in Barnstable for more than 40 years before retiring in 2012.

Ray was known for his gentle, caring demeanor, wonderfully dry sense of humor, tall stature, pleasant smile and love of sweets, but he will be most remembered for the great love he had for his wife, children, grandchildren and Basset Hound, Patrick. Ray was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease 10 years ago and despite the tolls of this disease, he continued to recognize Betty, Matthew and Annie throughout this time for which they feel blessed.

With wonderful memories, Ray leaves Betty and Patrick, Matthew and his wife, Genel, Annie, her husband, Glen, and their three children Glen Jr., Brendan and Katie, two brothers, Richard (and Cathy) Stewart and Russell (and Polly) Stewart, a sister Nancy (and John) Weber, two sisters-in-law, Ellen O'Riordan and Anne (and Paul) Ellsworth, a brother-in-law, John O'Riordan, and several nieces and nephews. Ray is predeceased by his parents, sister Lois Stewart, parents-in-law, John and Delia O'Riordan and sister-in-law, Jane O'Riordan.

A private burial will take place at the Brewster Cemetery where Ray will be laid to rest with his in-laws, John, Delia and Jane.
