Robert F. O'Connell of So.Dennis died on March 25 at Eagle Pond Rehab and Living Center. He leaves his loving wife, Ellen (Eckberg), of 55 years. Born in Hartford, CT, in 1926, he was the son of the late Helen and Joseph O'Connell and brother of the late Joseph O'Connell, Jr.
Robert served in the Army in World War II in the occupational forces under General Patton. He received a B.S. from Holy Cross in 1949, a S.M. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953, and a J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1958. He was a patent attorney with the Boston law firm Dike, Bronstein, Roberts, Cushman & Pfund for many years.
He lived in Lexington, MA, for 38 years and helped form the Lexington Bicentennial Band in 1974. He and Ellen retired to South Dennis in 1995. He was a past-president of The Friends of the Cape Cod Symphony. He played tenor saxophone with the Cape Cod Conservatory Band, the Harwich Town Band and the Moonlighters.
Robert leaves three daughters, Katharine O’Connell (Joseph Antonio) of No. Providence, RI, Lynne O’Connell (R. Lynn Rardin) of Watertown, MA, and Carol O’Connell (Kent Stauffer) of Las Vegas, NV, and three grandchildren, Louisa and Samuel Antonio and Kieran Stauffer.
A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 PM on Monday, March 28, at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 729 Rte. 134, So. Dennis. A mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 29, at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster. Burial with military honors at Oak Ridge Cemetery, So. Dennis, with follow the mass. A collation at the church will follow and all are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Cod Conservatory Band c/o John Hagon, 5 Derby Ln., Harwich, or to Our Lady of the Cape Haitian ministry, 468 Stony Brook Rd., Brewster, MA 02631.
